NJ Senators Introduce Camera Enforcement Inoculation Act: “These camera enforcement schemes have been proven to be about money, not safety”

Senators Nick Sacco, Nick Scutari and Declan O’Scanlon joined together to introduce S-2893, which they have titled the “Camera Enforcement Inoculation Act.”

“We now have overwhelming proof that red light and speed cameras don’t improve safety,” Senator O’Scanlon said. “Every competent, independent, rigorous study done to date has shown that there is a net decrease in safety when these systems are employed. There is absolutely no reason why New Jersey should be complicit in these corrupt, highway robbery schemes.”

“These cameras are almost invariably placed where they’ll generate the most money, frequently at intersections with shortened yellow lights or roads with speed limits set to guarantee huge numbers of tickets. Profit-motivated enforcement is invariably corrupting. These tickets are an annoyance to those that can afford them. The people most impacted by these systems are the poor and working middle class. The impact can be devastating to those living paycheck to paycheck. New Jersey shouldn’t facilitate such theft from our citizens” O’Scanlon said.

“These camera enforcement schemes have been proven to be about money, not safety,” Senator Sacco said. “You go on a trip through Pennsylvania, Maryland, DC or New York City and you receive multiple tickets in the mail a month or more later and you have no way to defend yourself. It’s infuriating. New Jersey does not prey upon our drivers with the use of cameras. Other states are able to prosecute us through the cooperation of our MVC with their cameras. This bill will protect our motorists from this predatory practice ”

“For years I helped lead the bipartisan fight against for-profit camera enforcement here in New Jersey. It amounts to nothing more than thinly-veiled government sanctioned theft. We won the battle here, now it’s time to shield our residents from the even more egregious schemes in other states. Don’t let anyone fool you, it’s got nothing to do with safety. It’s all about the money,” Scutari said.

The bill introduced by the Democrat and Republican legislators prohibits the NJ MVC from providing identifying information to camera enforcement entities, thus making it impossible to issue tickets for automated enforcement infractions to N.J. motorists.

  1. WOW!!
I am very impressed that we have a bipartisan bill to actually protect us from predatory ticketing!! With all the tax raises and new costs that have been coming out of Trenton, this is a nice surprise!
who are you and what did you do with our real politicians???

  2. God bless these guys. We obviously all want safer roads but we also all want our freedoms and rights to be protected. If the studies show that they don’t work and do not increase safety, they should most certainly not be be introduced here. It’s unamerican and reminiscent of big brother watching your every move.

  3. So someone who does something wrong shouldn’t get a ticket because he lives in a different state?! Does that even make sense? Say a bochur hitchhiking in Jackson shouldn’t get a ticket because in Lakewood they don’t ticket for that…

  4. Thank you for introducing this bill. Finally someone in government is talking some sense. TLS please keep us updated with what happens next!!!

  5. WOW! These great humanitarians are the same ones that passed the 13cent gas tax and by the way these same humanitarians are going to RAISE the gas tax beginning October 1, we just don’t know by how much.
When are we going to stop believing these Politicians in Trenton care anything about the working class. All we are is their piggy bank, to supply money for their own good.
They put articles like this to fool us and from what I can see it worked.
Instead of calling them what they are we think they are great…sad.
