New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill says the prospect of soldiers being ordered to carry out a public firing-squad execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan “keeps me up at night,” warning of the lasting impact on the service members involved.

In a statement criticizing the Trump administration’s plan, Sherrill said Hasan “killed 13 innocent soldiers and deserves to be brought to justice,” but argued that a televised execution would be “contrary to the values that this nation stands for and that I took oaths to protect.”

“One aspect of this in particular keeps me up at night: the horror of detailing soldiers to be in the firing squad,” she said. “Most veterans like myself are unfamiliar with firing squads because our military hasn’t used one in over 80 years.”

Sherrill said she thinks about her own children serving in the military and a young service member being assigned to a firing squad despite moral objections or personal opposition.

“Just about anyone who has served in combat can tell you about the toll it takes. This is different and worse: firing on someone for the public spectacle of it,” she said.

The governor also criticized Congress for not intervening, saying it was “hard to understand how Congress has not called an emergency session to block it.”

“It infuriates me to think of all the Members of Congress who have thanked me for my service on Veterans Day, but have said nothing about this and refuse to hold Trump and Hegseth accountable,” Sherrill said.

She accused President Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth of putting a public display ahead of the welfare of military personnel.

“I imagine the young person getting detailed to the firing squad and doing their duty, following their orders. And I think of the lasting impact that will have on them,” she said. “I just wish the two men in charge of our military cared half as much about the men and women who serve as they do about themselves.”

Interesting does the killing of 13 Service members keep her up at night?

He definitely deserves the death penalty but a televised execution makes us no better than the Taliban. That is not who we are as Americans.

Explain why, use actual logic not emotionally charged rhetoric

You are clearly ignorant.

Public executions have been commonplace throughout the Western tradition and American history more specifically.

We as a society refuse to look at death for what it is, and in order to pacify ourselves and make ourselves feel better, we put executions behind closed doors, and got rid of the “messier” forms of execution in favor of the neater more “humane” lethal injection (which infamously failed recently).

The point of a public execution is retribution, along with a deterrence of further crime when the public sees what happens to one who commits such crimes.

We see a similar concept lehavdil in Shas, where sekila was a mass stoning in which the public participated in.

Would the governor prefer having him dropped from her helicopter, instead?

No. She just doesn’t want publicly live streamed executions. Very simple.

She’s against anything that trump does, if trump went on national TV and said he eats burgers she would publicly decry eating them

Did this privileged white female Governor lose any sleep over the MURDER of Laken Riley, by illegal Biden/Mayorkas hero José Antonio Ibarra???

Some of you people are just bloodthirsty freaks. If you think live-streaming an execution to the public for children to see is good, you are probably too far gone to ever join the rest of us back with humanity.

The only thing this does is help normalize and prepare people for more and more violence by the state. If you think you will never be on the end of that state violence, then I will not care at all when the day comes that it is turned on you.

should have spoken up while you could

Just think about this: Iran, the Houthis, the Taliban and North Korea are the only ones who have had publicly-live-streamed executions! THINK ABOUT THAT EVERYONE!!!

Now that she is up at night, maybe she can get some positive work done…. like worry about all the illegal aliens in her domain. That should keep her busy until the end of her term!

Oh I’m SO glad and relieved that Trump has someone in the administration has more sense than Hegseth and Trump is listening to them and not streaming it!!!!

Imagine how many hundreds of thousands of little kids around the world would end up seeing it (whether live or a video) either with or without their parents’ approval. And then how many of them would be messed up by it. It made me so upset that they would allow that to happen!
