Future New Jersey Governors, Legislators Set for A Hefty Pay Raise Under A new Bill Signed by Governor Murphy

[UPDATE: January 17, 6:45pm] New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed a bill which provides a salary hike for all 120 members of the Legislature, the governor and all cabinet-level positions in the state.

Beginning in 2026, the annual $49,000 salary for members of the Assembly and Senate will be raised to $82,000, the first salary bump for the Legislature since 2002, when it jumped from $35,000 to $49,000.

The bill also includes a raise for the governor, up from the current $175,000 annually to $210,000 per year. However, it would not benefit Governor Murphy who is term-limited and will be out of office when the new salary goes into effect.

The salary hikes passed by a bi-partisan vote of 48-24 in the Assembly and 27-7 in the Senate.

Committees in both Legislative chambers approved a newly-introduced bill which would raise the salaries of members of the Legislature, the governor and all cabinet-level positions in the state.

The bill, which is on the fast-track for final approval in the Senate and Assembly next week, would raise the annual salary for all Senators and members of the Assembly from the current $49,000 per year to $82,000 a year, beginning in January, 2026.

According to the bill, the governor’s salary would increase from $175,000 to $210,000, however, it would not benefit Governor Murphy who is term-limited and will be out of office when the new salary goes into effect.

Compared to the Legislative salaries in neighboring states, this increase would still place New Jersey well below Pennsylvania’s $103,000 annual salary and New York’s $142,000.

If the bill is approved, it would be the first pay increase since 2002, when state lawmakers approved a salary hike from $35,000 to the current $49,000.
