New Bill Would Require the MVC to Issue Some Documents, Including Driver Licenses on the Same Day

Under a new bill introduced by New Jersey state Senator Bob Singer (R-Lakewood), the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission would be required to provide all customers who have an in-person appointment with the agency, with the necessary documents that same day.

“This bill will assist during the wait period to receive your license in the mail,” Singer told TLS. “The bill also helps customers receive documents the same day as their appointment prior to leaving the agency,” Singer added.

According to the bill, the following documents would be available for same-day issuance:

  • standard basic driver’s licenses
  • standard motorcycle license;
  • standard special learner’s permit;
  • standard examination permit;
  • standard probationary driver’s license;
  • standard non-driver identification card;
  • REAL ID basic driver’s license;
  • REAL ID motorcycle license;
  • REAL ID probationary driver’s license;
  • REAL ID identification card;
  • commercial driver license; and
  • motor vehicle registration certificate.

The bill also requires the commission to ensure that one or more cameras and license printers are available at each commission agency location for the same-day issuance of the documents.

The bill was introduced in the Assembly as well, and awaits a committee hearing in both chambers.

  1. While I can appreciate the need for a photo ID, the amount of people who have the ability to issue one needs to be controlled.

    Weren’t the photo printers taken out of thr local offices due to fraud?

    A fraudulent Real ID could let someone on the no fly list fly domestically.

    • I was going to comment that the last time I went to the MVC they printed my license on the spot.

      I guess if they removed that capability because of fraud that would explain why the topic is up for conversation.

  2. Oh dear,

    That may be to crushing for the overworked workers.

    We may possibly need to limit the amount of appointments per day, for some respite.

  3. The mailing of the ID is an added security feature as it requires a person to have access to the address they’re claiming to reside at. They usually come in just a few days & if pulled over with a receipt & the system showing you have a valid driver’s license recently issued (which means its on its way) a police officer would have to be a real “*#&@%” to make an issue out of it.

  4. This bill will make things less secure.
    Mailed process is preferable for security of identity documents and safety on the roads.
    There are a significant number of fraudsters/scammers such that the checks necessary are provided for by the mailing process from a central issuance unit.
    This is not a well-thought out proposal.
    The pros outweigh the minimal “cons” from a mailed process.
    And the transactions will now take longer and, given the enormous volume that needs to be handled, this will cause greater delays.
    Please rethink and reject this legislation.
