A 36-year-old man was arrested after allegedly setting a woman on fire in a bizarre incident in a wooded area in Ocean County, leaving her behind with severe burns, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.
Justin Martin of Saddle Brook, NJ, was charged with attempted murder and aggravated arson in connection with the incident, which occurred Thursday afternoon near Hawkin Road and Success Road in Plumsted Township.
At approximately 1:36 p.m., police and EMS responded to the wooded area for a report of a female burn victim. First responders found the woman suffering from burns and in distress. She was transported to Temple University Burn Center in Philadelphia, where she was listed in stable condition.
An investigation determined that Martin allegedly caused the woman to suffer burns and smoke inhalation before fleeing the area in a vehicle, leaving her behind.
Detectives located Martin in Asbury Park shortly after midnight Friday. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Ocean County Jail, where he is being held pending a detention hearing.
The investigation was conducted by investigators in Ocean and Monmouth counties, including the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Plumsted Township Police Department, Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, Asbury Park Police Department, Eatontown Police Department, Keansburg Police Department, and Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office.
