I have been a camp owner in this town for the past 25 years. Over those 25 years, I have had the privilege of seeing generations of children come through our camp and of working with countless incredible staff members, including counselors and JCs.
As a camp owner, I do everything I can to pay my staff a fair and competitive salary while still trying to make a livable wage myself after years of hard work, responsibility, and investment. I’ve also had the unique opportunity to interact with parents from every socioeconomic background imaginable.
And yet, every summer I see something that is becoming increasingly difficult to understand.
When it comes time to tip the people who spend an entire month caring for our children, some parents suddenly become the biggest penny-pinchers.
I understand that everyone has expenses. I understand that times can be difficult, and I understand that there are legitimate reasons why some families may not be able to give as much as others. But let’s be honest: can we really not afford to tip the price of a schnitzel sandwich to the counselor or JC who spent an entire month taking care of our child?
What message are we sending when a bunk of 20 kids has only one or two families who tip their counselor or JC?
Our kids notice.
We teach our children all summer about hakaras hatov. We tell them to appreciate the people who help them. We teach them to say thank you. So let’s show them what that looks like in practice.
A $10 or $20 tip may not seem like much to many of us. But to a 17-, 18-, or 19-year-old counselor or JC who just spent a month working incredibly hard with our children, it can mean the world.
This isn’t about making anyone feel guilty or demanding that every family give the same amount. It’s about recognizing hard work and showing appreciation.
If we want our children to grow up understanding gratitude, let’s give them a real-life example.
Let’s appreciate the people who take care of our kids. Let’s show our counselors and JCs that we value what they do. And let’s teach our children that saying thank you isn’t just something we talk about — it’s something we do.
Even $10-$20 can go a long way.

Oh boy! It’s going to get loud in here….
I just scrolled back up to let you know how right you are. I’ve been working my way down, boy it’s loud!
It would be so nice if the counselor / JC actually called to introduce themselves or ask if there’s anything they should know about our kids to make their summer more enjoyable. I was actually quite shocked to not get one phone call this year from 2 big camps and one smaller scale one.
if you’re a complete stranger, don’t expect a tip.
MANY CAMPS DO NOT ALLOW THAT
it’s to make sure the staff do not become too involved
to the point of problems
there job is to give your kid a amazing summer not anything more than that,
Because it isn’t the cost of a schnitzel sandwich. It’s the cost of a schnitzel sandwich multipled by counselors, JCs, waitresses and the number of children you send to camp. It isn’t whether you can’t afford a schnitzel sandwich (and, mind you, those cost 4x what they did 20 years ago), but whether you can’t afford afford an additional $50 in tips per child
As a business owner I can tell you that I never expect tips even when doing the PHYSICAL hard work myself. The idea of tipping is an American craziness. Unclear why you don’t tip the bagger at Walmart but are expected to tip every other service based provider. Again, if you want to tip, that’s totally up to you & appreciated, & if your child is especially difficult that’s another story. For a business owner (yes camps are a business), to not understand the “no tipping mentality” is to not live with reality.
I was a counselor in a camp unless you deal with your costumers 24/7 and be nice to them even though they get annoying sometimes and clean up there mess help them put on there linen bring them to the doctor if there not feeling well and still always have smile for them while not getting paid then don’t talk I’m not saying you have to give 100 dollars per counselor not even 20 just something even 10 works just to show appreciation just to show you acknowledge someone is working hard for if you can’t give money you can write a letter it does the job!
That’s for the parents to decide what to tip. The yeshiva doesn’t tell me how much to tip rebbe on chanuka and purim. Sending one hundred reminders about tips and amounts is a payment.
When your bank account has -$214, yup you can’t even tip the price of a schnitzel sandwich. You can’t buy a schnitzel sandwich either. You can’t afford daycamp either but you’ve got no choice because you have to work. Your post left me scratching my head.
Dont scratch too hard. you can get hurt!
If it was $10-20 then that would maybe be ok. The camp i send my kid basicly demands $30 per counsler and learning rebbi per half so that $10-20 (or $20-40 if u wanna count 2 counslers) becomes $180 and thats just for 1 kid. Not so much a shnitzel sandwich now is it….
Can i also add that camps for some reason have now decided that camp shud be for 3 weeks a half instead of 4 like it used to be and costs keep going up. That extra $180 i need to figure out what to do with my kids for 2 more weeks (yes im not a lakewood family)
(Also p.s. in my understanding at my kids camp the teenage staff isnt even getting paid by the camp rather from govt funds that are used to pay for teen jobs in the summer so even more the question goes to the camps to pay ur staff more)
Have you noticed how parents are tipping less and less? That’s because camps are charging insane amounts. You pay the counselors bubkas. Where is all the money going? Take some out of your well padded pocket and pay your staff a living wage.
As a parent, I do not understand the concept of tipping when we pay multiple thousand PER KID. I am so sorry that you have to take your own salary and don’t have enough left to pay your staff properly.
I have to BORROW thousands upon thousands of dollars to pay for my kids summer camp on top of tuition for school, at a cost of more than $3000 per kid (and for the boys that is only for 3 weeks and I have to cover school camp for them as well.)
I would expect that with my $3000+ dollars per kid you can cover your salary and their salary without the need for additional financial drain from parents.
Don’t get me wrong. We very much appreciate all that you and the staff do for our kids in camp.
But maybe some salaries are too high on the top if you cant afford to pay generously and have to take more out of the parent pocket.
Its not ok and its not right.
Tipping should be an optional hakaras Hatov gesture for those that have the means. Not a required additional cost that parents are considered kafuy tov if they cant afford another blessed penny.
You have know idea how many shalom bayis issues are there just because ppl cant afford the basic camp expenses.
Remember, the entire world is raising prices on us because costs are more. On every front. The only thing not being raised is our incomes.
This tipping meshugas needs to come to an end.
(Once upon a time, camps charged a few hundred dollars and it wasn’t enough to cover all staff salary so they added a tipping feature. In our times, camps charge thousands. Tips need to end).
No Tax on Tips!
Dear camp owner,
shame on you, for the price that is charged for camps it should include tips. Let’s see financials of camps, I have seen them there making money, nobody is running a camp for chesed. Mind you, not one phone call from a counselor to introduce themselves, it’s very simple you put in the efforts people will feel obligated to tip. If your child feels the love she will make sure the parent tips.
its time people speak up and regulate camp prices. We did it for weddings we can do it for camps.
If camp and weddings r regulated then tuition and babysitters should be too …maybe the cost of the schnitzel sandwiches and clothing are too much.
A 20$ tip may not sound like a big deal but if a family has multiple children in camp this can really add up. Many families stretch themselves just to be able to afford the price of camp.
(I personally try to write a nice note and send it with a chocolate bar or danish to show my appreciation because yes I do know that counselors really do work hard!)
Parents pay Camp
Camp pays Counsler
THE END
(In summary: Pay your employees!)
P.S. Dear Mr. Camp Owner, Do you struggle to pay your mortgage? Do you ask for tuition breaks? Do you hope to break even every month?
Yup Im a multi-millionaire. you?
What about cleaners they deserve
a tip because without them/your school would be dirty !!!!Also i have plenty of photos of dirty schools in our area so do appreciate your cleaner’s and tip them or give them a raise and stop being cheap!!!!!
Dear camp owner,
what I can’t understand is paying so much money. But camp isn’t 4 full weeks, let’s cut off one day from the 4 weeks because why not. Let’s also make erev Tisha bav a half a day cuz why not. Why not have working parents just take off and not be able to work and get paid.
I have 5 girls bli ayin hara in Lakewood daycamps. I have not gotten one call from a single counselor from either half to introduce themselves or hear about my child. Camp directors, before sending out multiple texts reminding us to tip your staff, please ensure that your staff has connected at least once with their campers parents over the summer. These young staff are not married women with responsibilities, they should be able to find some time over the course of each half to speak to each parent for 2-3 minutes (approximately under one hour in total per staff). They can all do that if encouraged by their Director. Additionally, my girls are constantly complaining that their counselors are not around and are just having fun with the the other counselors. If I were to pay $20 per counselor (2 per bunk) per half, I would be paying an additional $400 to the already astronomical camp prices. Camp directors, I offer you to lower your prices by $20 per child per half for next summer, and I’ll be glad to show my hakaras hatov to your staff.
Unrelated to this conversation but you mentioned that you have 5 daughters, so can I just wish you that you together with your spouse should be zoiche to marry them all off with ease and with abundant wealth and with all the brochos that the RSO Has to offer….
It’s not my problem you pay the counselors an embarrassing salary.
I am a camp owner and I pay my staff well. I let parents know that they r free to show hakaras hatov in any way possible. That can be a note, an ice coffee or money. Parents pay for camp and staff gets paid nicely. Tips r what they sound like tips. If you are able to it’s much appreciated. If it is too much for you no judgement made . Be had years when I was overwhelmed with counselors and years that I had just 1 kid in camp… each situation you need to figure out what works for u
Which camp? I am not aware of any local day camp that pays counselors “well”. Each counselor should get paid at least the price of the fee you charge for 1 camper.
How about charge $50 more per camper and just pay your employees – you know the ones that spend all the time with the kids….
Mr Camp owner don’t harrass the parents about tips before you pay your staff an acceptable amount. The camps be it sleep away or local pay a pitiful salary. It’s simply not acceptable and not acceptable to demand your parents to tip more than $10!!!
Dear Camp Director,
I am writing to express my frustration regarding the current cost of camp program and the expectations placed on parents.
As a parent who has sent multiple children to your camp, I am incredibly disappointed by the lack of financial consideration for families. Requests for multi-child discounts—even a modest break of $25 or $50 per child for those sending four or five children—have been completely ignored. Furthermore, being told “if you don’t like it, the door is there” is dismissive and entirely unprofessional . Additionally, Counsels and jc arent paid well. We can make a survey and see what camps charge and what is paid to staff. Define a respectful wage please.
Many parents are taking out significant loans that they will be paying off for years just to afford sending their children to camp. On top of these already high prices, you are demanding that parents also provide tips for the counselors and junior counselors. If, as you claim, it is “only $20,” then you should tip every single staff member directly from the camp’s salary revenue.
The financial burden on families is unsustainable, and the rules and expectations applied to parents do not seem to apply to the camp administration. If the cost of running a reasonably priced, enjoyable program is too high, no one is forcing you to keep the camp open. I urge you to reconsider your pricing structure and your attitude toward the families who support your camp.
There are other communities that make a massive program for a fraction of a price and the kids love it. Geshmake time doesnt need to cost crazy. There are Day camps in colonies upstate ny that cost 1200 a summer and kids have a super blast. Shame on you for your entitled attitude
Imagine if every schnitzel sandwich store and every other store in town would start demanding tips from you and lecturing you if you don’t pay it, telling you how hard their employees work and how much your $20 means to them.
This is the most ridiculous thing i’ve read in a while! pretty apparent this guy lives in a bubble.
To the wonderful amazing Schron family, I think most of Lakewood is completely fed up with camp craziness, unnecessary give outs, rediculous overnights that all leave us broke. We are ready for Camp Mattel Leah!! It would be the best, most healthy and wholesome camp experience ever. Prices would be whats needed to cover expenses and salaries only. Expenses can also be limited, leaving campers just as happy if not happier! Wholesome fun where counselors give attention to each child by giving them a smile and a kind word, not by giving them another fanny pack with the camp name on it. There can also be strong rules in Camp Matel Leah, like absolutely no nosh on trips, avoiding the parents a few times a week running to the grocery and spending even more. Does a child really need 3 noshes as they are climbing the ropes in Climb Zone and for the 10 minute drive there?? And no paraphanelia for color war, avoiding parents running out to stores the night before color war! The list goes on and on…we all know that in the current system the kids are not coming home happier, if anything brattier. For those that will say how can we do this to the current camp owners as it their parnassa, there is plenty of people to go around. Just like the wedding halls, for those that need more extravagant and less rules, those camps will still be available. Or, wholesome competition is very ok! Current camp directors can see how happy the Matel Leah campers are and can then lower their standards and their prices! Alternatively, current camp directors can work for Camp Matel Leah instead. Looking forward to Camp Mattel Leah 2027!!!!!!
Wow. What a tone deaf letter. Seems like the Klal is on to something. I’m sure this is referring to the backlash to a camp sending out multiple emails urging parents who are not tipping to go ahead and do so (with guilt) stating the rebbi/staff rely on it.
I think everyone missed the boat! The point is the hakaras hatov!!! Just basic acknowledgement of the counselor who took care of your child in the heat, rain and sun!! Don’t have $10, that’s fine, a chocolate bar for under $2 and a note makes them feel good too!! Thank you camp owner for reminding me. My son’s last day is tomorrow!
When I look around and see all the expensive swag and craziness that the camps spend on, I literally want to cry – it is SO unnecessary and parents are so so burdened to pay for camp for their children – we really have no choice. I know so many parents who are seriously struggling to cover their expenses, while the kids are running off on expensive trips, with custom printed prizes, like towels, balls, sleeping bags etc etc… It simply makes no sense!! I believe if camps would take a survey, most parents would prefer to cut out all these meshugasen, the kids don’t need so many over the top trips, overnights, concerts, and who knows what else!!!!
all those that replied, you know that no camp owner wrote this up …. Right ?
You must be a camp owner… lol
It’s very very chazzerisch not to tip! and especially teenagers. This summer I don’t have anyone, but past summers I had teenagers working for me of which their parents sent them to me to learn a trade of which they didn’t expect any pay at all; but I would never let anyone leave empty, at the end of the day I used to give them $30 cash or even $50 or more if they worked hard. If I would be the father or grandfather of those poor teenagers I would be very angry at those chazeirim.
Its Chazerish not to pay your staff properly.
Which camp or daycamp pays decent wages! They can’t ; if the camp would pay everyone decent salaries 90% of the parents will not be able to afford; or the camp will go broke.
The staff is not there for money. The staff gets to go on nice trips, do activities with the kids etc or breath crisp fresh mountain air with 3 delicious meals a day and daven with nice minyanim. Most teens don’t need your $20 or $50 they have everything they need and it will not make them wealthy, but it’s a token of appreciation! and a parent regardless of their financial situation whom gives a teen “nothing” is a first class Chazer!
Just look at the camp owners houses…..nuff said
Thats the rubbish they feed ya
Daycamp charged me over $1000 for four weeks, it’s a very expensive time of year buying uniforms and school
supplies, school registration etc- not to mention almost yt season. Maybe lower the fee by $40 per camper and have $10 go to tips. I really just don’t have an extra $40 per kid ((2 counselors 2 jcs)
As a mother of a girl working for local camp and managing a double digit bunk (while earning $120 a week) all I can say is SHAME ON CAMP OWNERS. It’s called double dipping -raising price for the parents, and requesting parents to tip. It’s a camp owner, not parents, who are teaching teens that greed is a way to go. What hakaras ha tov can we talk about, if camp owners are the first one to use teens for cheap workforce: it’s counselors who are doing all/most of the work. And then they are getting paid “going into X -grade plus zero”. Pay your staff !
Why do I have to tip 20-25$ for 4 weeks of camp when we gift teachers who are teaching our kids all year, that amount on purim. The numbers don’t make sense.
It’s about a small thanks that is all.everyone here complaining about not having money but somehow there are sizes on Lil legs website for winter clothes that are already SOLD OUT in 90 degree weather because people are so afraid they won’t have later on. People are registering for school 24 months in advance. Everyone so concerned about future and spending but can’t look at the now and thank someone for taking care of the kids you are clothing or schooling…so messed up the priorities and kids feel and know it. . You need someone to call and service you to give thanks? It’s a girl or boy who worked instead of traveling or going on some fancy vacation or lazing around. Give a thanks.
Your right there are people and your wrong not everyone. That’s why you have so many people who a day before school starting or a day before YT is starting or the day of are in the stores buying cuz he don’t have the extra money to spend
Camps charged third price of admission 8 months in advance too…
Sorry camp owener but you opened up a can of worms!
I’ll tip your counselors when you tone down the major trips, overnights, swag, and all the narishkeit that no one wants or needs (except for the kids – they NEED it ‘because everyone is doing it’, where are the adults in the room to teach them that we are happy with what we have?!?)
Also, my son has been in camp for 3 weeks…not one phone call from the Rebbi, not one phone call from the counselor, not one phone call from the JC. My son doesn’t even know their names.
So, nameless, faceless people, thank you for giving my son an amazing summer! If you pass me with my son in the supermarket feel free to say hi because I won’t know who you are.
as a counsler i think every parent should tip the counslers the counslers can be doing so many other things over the summer ex… traveling camps and they chose to give over the summer to your son
Unfortunately it’s not usually something teens choose over traveling camps, etc. Most would pick the traveling camps but parents can’t afford it. Just clarifying this small detail
I really hope this is a fake letter because it’s a major chutzpa to ask parents to pay an extra cent after the crazy camp prices. NOBODY asked for this. Take camp back down a few notches and we can get back to tipping.
Everyone has an opinion over here, How about people who are counselors in special needs camps and are basically volunteering, What do they deserve as a tip, the parents aren’t paying a penny for the kids to go to camp
The people running these daycamps are making a lot of money doing so. It’s a real business, and they charge like it’s a real business. Let them pay their staff normally and stop relying on the parents that they are already taking advantage of..
Dear camp director maybe can help me out. I I recently moved from Brooklyn to Lakewood area I was paying $1,000 a half for a top notch Day Camp non-stop programming shows etc 2,000 for a summer that inclded 8 weeks. The entertainers don’t charge more to come down to Lakewood neither does the food truck by the way the only thing different is the staff get paid way less over here than in other places! I’m curious to know how you feel it’s right to go ahead and to charge ridiculous prices can you enlighten me what’s more expensive here when you barely pay your staff?
Don’t forget in New York you have youth core
Youth corps doesnt pay for camp tution moron! Additionaly, many dont get on and plenty of camps dont touch it.
Youth corps doesnt pay for camp tution moron! Additionaly, many dont get on and plenty of camps dont touch it.
I am writing to address the recent feedback regarding our camp’s pricing and programming from my perspective as a camp director.
To provide some context, we are intentionally catering to a clientele that explicitly requests upscale, high-end programming. Furthermore, unlike the schools themselves, many independent camp directors do not own their buildings or pools. We pay significant rent to the schools we lease from. This is a business, and like any other local business, we have every right to operate at a profit. A more appropriate question might be directed toward school administrators as to why they do not operate their own profitable day camps using the buildings they already own, as is common practice in places like Brooklyn at much cheaper prices.
It is unfair to fault our operation for catering to the high-end crowd that desires this level of service. For those claiming they do not want these premium offerings, I would ask how many local, budget-friendly day camps currently exist in town. The reality is that the same demographic spending significantly on homes, vacations, high-end restaurants, and other luxuries would likely not be satisfied with a basic barbecue serving only hot dogs or simple arts and crafts.
Regarding the comparison to upstate bungalow colonies being cheaper, that is true for a very simple reason: the colonies themselves collectively decide their own standards. Many families who go to these colonies prefer to avoid over-the-top programming, voting as a community on what they want. Consequently, a lower-end colony typically features a lower-end day camp, while a high-end colony features higher-end programming.
Ultimately, this is a business, and it must be financially viable for us to operate. The only alternative would be if the community as a whole decided to collectively lower its standards. If a budget day camp could open without being perceived as old-fashioned or undesirable, only then could lower prices be sustained.
Thank you for your understanding.
Best regards,
A Lakewood Camp Director
Dear Parents,
I am writing to you today as a fellow community member and school administrator. I want to begin by saying that I truly hear your concerns. I understand the frustration behind your complaints against the school, particularly regarding the operation of a non-profit day camp. I am also aware of how difficult it is to pay tuition, and I sincerely respect the sacrifices you make to do so.
The reality we face is that tuition only covers roughly 60% of our actual operating costs. Our staff must be paid fairly, the mortgage must be met, and we must cover our standard bills. Unlike community-based or Hasidic schools that may have outside donors funding their operations to keep tuition lower and offer scholarships, we are a private entity and face a much harder time fundraising.
To bridge this 40% gap and keep our base tuition at a bare minimum, we rely heavily on four alternative sources of income:
1. Renting out our building to a commercial tenant for the summer, which maximizes revenue while minimizing expenses.
2. Renting our pool during the summer to day camps and families.
3. Monthly rent from a catering service that utilizes our wedding hall.
4. Our food service program that cooks for our school and several others.
These auxiliary programs are vital revenue streams that keep our base tuition significantly lower than it would otherwise be. However, we often encounter expectations that these services should be provided at cost or for free to school families—such as hosting weddings at cost, offering free pool access, or providing catering for $5 a head. Doing so would eliminate the very profit margins that allow us to keep your tuition down.
We are not looking to place an undue burden on you; we are simply working to keep the school operational. If you know of any viable alternative funding sources, such as specific donors or government programs that we may not be aware of, please feel free to reach out to the lakewood scoop.
Thank you for your time, your continued support, and your understanding.
Best regards,
A Lakewood Administrator
Hello ai
Ok please raise the rents of the caterer and pool rental as well as upgrade the food service to sell to party planners. Then u can open a cheaper day camp and help us.
HI
you didnt answer the main point
that you pay nothing (yes 100/150$ a week is nothing for the work they do) for the counslers.
and you have the chutzpah to ask parents that pay you top money to comensate them aith tips
thats sick and greedy

I can’t speak for other people I can speak for myself the least anybody gets by me is minimum wage I have people getting paid a lot more as well. If anyone is getting paid 100 dollars a summer hes likely not paying minimum wage. Its illegal and can be fined by dept of labor. As for my profit margin. Its a buissness. Feel free to open a competion. My client base is by me for years. I charge a lot and deliver a lot. I understand you want a cheap program. Go for it. Yu do yours I’ll do mine! Hatzlocha
Very good. You’re running a business, charging a premium for premium service. So pay your staff premium wages. Shoteh.
Thats so silly! Even in a high end company the janitor for example gets a low salary. Some jobs pay low. Its your choice to take it ir leave it It doesnt matter how good of a worker u are. In New Jersey, minors under 18 must be paid the state minimum wage of $15.92 per hour only if they work in specific industries like retail, restaurants, or hotels. Other types of employers, such as summer camps or seasonal amusements, are exempt from paying minors the minimum wage. Thus, the camp’s have no legal obligation to pay these minors even minimum wage. The government is 100 percent ok with this. We just feel entitled to share in their profits.Obviously, staff over 18 must be paid at least minimum wage. Kudos to Yankee for paying all staff minimum wage. Hes going above and beyond.
As someone who worked in day camps for the past 6 years up until this summer,
I can tell you that whoever wrote This didn’t think far enough to realize- that anyone whose working in a camp isn’t doing it for the money,
what should be is a thank you note I’ve had campers whose parents sent a 2$ chocolate bar but even that’s not necessary and we don’t feel owed it but pls send a note saying thank you it means a lot more than 20$ most jc counselors head staff etc. go above and beyond and just to know someone took the time to apricate that is what matters.
ex:(HI Moishy had a amazing summer thank you for being his counselor this summer
The kattzenneluboegenstiens )
On the topic of pay,
If u would sit down and do the math I don’t know about “camps” but day camps really r not coming out with so much
think: staff from jc’s to learning group Rebbiem, day trips, major trips food nosh related expenses.
shows activity supplies transportation ECT…..
As noted the other commenters these they can serve for a profit I know every Steakhouse owner says it’s tight and every property manager says he’s not making money and everything says that’s really not worth it to do it so why don’t you just sell it why do we have day camps in town that around for years and years is it because they’re doing it as a hobby the prices don’t reflect that get real I’m an accountant for several day camps in town the ones that are privately owned do very well the ones that don’t do well usually have a bad program or just bad Mazel that simple I see the books they’re not poor people relax and essential Jersey Community everybody cries poverty the guy that owns 20 buildings also complains how much his accounting fees are stop complaining and get real this is a money maker
As an accountant, you should know to never discuss your clients’ finances, even without mentioning names.
Who can afford a shnitzel sandwich?
Wait! Do camps charge for staff to come to camp??????
Its only junior staff and waiters usually . They need a dedicated supervisor Rebbe etc. The money needs to come from somewhere
I happen to tip my kids counselor and jc , however u charging and arm and leg is a chutzpah
So tips going down is problem but length of camp going down and price of camp going up is okay. Right?
Uts because they abolished visiting day. Out of site out of mind.
Tipping doesn’t necessarily need to be money.. It can be a tip like “take your raincoat when it’s raining outside” or something like that
I sent my daughter to a travelling camp which was very expensive…. For 2 weeks we paid over 4,000$.
at the end of the camp they ask for 30$ tips per counselor and there were 6 counselors!!
I asked my daughter if she had anything to do with the counselors and she said , no they were busy helping the director, she had nothing to do with them! So I didn’t tip…
The director herself reached out to let me know that my daughter’s counselors were so good to her and I should show my hakaras hatov!!
I paid her enough money for her to pay her counselors!!!
why is she putting her responsibilities on me??
