Letter: Serious Safety Concern

Hi, I want to report a serious student safety issue at a school in Lakewood, NJ.

My younger sister was released to the wrong person during pickup. There are two young girls at the school with the same first name but different last names. The staff at the front already knows exactly who is supposed to pick up my sister and who is not. Despite that, they still released her to the wrong person.

The school did not properly verify her full name or any identifying details before letting her go. The only reason she was given away was because the person arrived in a silver car similar to my mom’s, which should not have been used as verification. This is very concerning because basic identity checks were not followed.

The person did return her, but this caused significant distress and raises serious concerns about pickup procedures and student safety.

I can provide more details, including the school name and timeline, if needed.

I have a silver car too!
Do you need me to do pick up today?

mistakes can happen anywhere.

Not needed. Mistakes do happen. Schools try their best to have everything under control, but everyone is human. Maybe the person picking up your sister should come in to sign her out, and actually walk her out. This way your sister will know never to go out unless it is the right person picking her up.

That’s part of the problem. Schools don’t require the adult to come in and sign out the child. This is the school policy that needs reform.

It would be a lot more effective to discuss this with the school.

What was the schools response when you complained to them?

Are you related to Emile Zola?

You should contact the school directly. They will take it seriously.

You probably should homeschool. Safer that way.

Thats terrible!! So emotional!! Hope it never happens again! I think you should volunteer to be in charge of identifying every parent and making sure evryones papers are in order before handing over the child to the suspicious looking lady with sunglasses whos really here for her own daughter! You never know she may be in the mood of someone elses kid that day especially if hers was very whiny when she sent her off to school that morning!

A school is required and responsible for every single student from pick up to drop off. Including making sure the child gets in the correct car or bus.

This is obviously a concern. It seems like more a concern with this specific school though, and I hope you/your parents addressed this with them before posting it here. I know by my kids schools there is always one of the teachers or rabbeim outside and when private cars pickup. They go to every single cars window prior to calling the kid/s telling them their ride is there to verify who is the one picking up the child.

Also, The child should be taught to never go in a car unless they know the person picking up (whether at school or elsewhere). If it’s sometimes a different person picking up on a specific day, their guardian needs to let their child know in the morning.

If you want to report it…you are better off reporting it directly to the school, not to the greater Lakewood community! Just my 2 cents 🙂 Glad your sister is safe.

While this sounds like a pretty scary mess up, and in other circumstances could’ve caused horrifying ramifications, this is the wrong venue for this complaint. You need to bring this up with school administration, not random people on the internet.

Big mixup

I was waiting for a ride which I was told was a Toyota Camry and ended up going into the wrong one.
Turns out there’s more than one Camry in Lakewood

Do you hear

Time for decent school bus system in Lakewood. These roads don’t support a car per student anymore. I’m would be surprised if that’s only one mix per day. Probably happens plenty.
