Letter: L’Toeles Harabim

Hi,

I’m a small business owner currently using Google voice as a number.

We’ve been using it for over a year now and today, my account was suddenly suspended with no communication and no reason given.

I attempted to reach out to Google through their process and got no where. They said someone will reach out to me in the next 10 days, but they have no record of a reason for the suspension.

For now, my business is significantly slowed until I hear back from them.

A lot of people use Google voice. I think they should know about sudden suspensions before they’re also hit without warning.

  1. I got notification via email recentl my google voice acct was going to be suspended if I didn’t use it… something about a legacy acct? Possibly read about it on dans deals too if you want to look into it more

  2. Google may be a good online search engine, but apparently when you try to reach out to them, it’s like searching in the dark. They suspend you, and then they keep you suspended in space while you wait for their response. Truth be told, I don’t even know what Google Voice is, but I noticed from making calls to a number of businesses, that they use this service. But I seem to recall the voice on the other end of the line calling itself “Google Assistant.” Maybe someone can explain to me what this service is, and how it differs from other voice mail services.
Of course, if I wasn’t lazy, I could find this out online, using none other than good ole Google Search.

  3. This might happen if there are suspicious usage patterns, like repeated calls to the same number, or a large volume of calls. They have a paid version for businesses, the free personal version is not meant for heavy commercial use. Unfortunately there often isn’t any recourse to these suspensions. Maybe if you sign up for the paid Google Workspaces version, they will be more inclined to reinstate it? Another point — if you originally transferred the number from a different provider, they might be legally required to let you have it back (not sure about that point, though).

    • just to add on what @zelig said that also sending out “spam” messages the same message to multiple ppl will trigger a suspension. Been there done that. I think if i recall correctly being able to switch our number over successfully to grasshopper. Good luck

  4. Anyone know if it’s possible to upgrade from a personal account to a business account while keeping my number? And if so how to do it From an iPhone?
If anyone can post would be very much appreciated

  5. Was it a business account?
Personal accounts shouldn’t be used for business. I’ve heard others who were suspended for that reason.

  6. Update: b”h we got an email this morning letting us know that our account will be reinstated we are in the process of porting our number out of Google voice.
I did learn something’s during this whole process is that Google voice has no direct number you must respond to the link in the notification and wait for a response which can take up to 10 days in our case it was less than 24 hrs and they will respond with a decision but you only get one chance and if they deny then you’re stuck also we couldn’t port the number out while this was going on because you don’t have account access so easy to right to use this product even with a business plan, there was no warning no email…

The Google assistant is a service that screens the call coming in if its a suspected spam. Even if it doesn’t automatically screen it you can click on “screen call”
I have a Google phone & it has the option automatically. I’m not sure on non Google phones.
    Its a great feuture
I was getting tons of spam calls & now I rarely get them. If its a legit call then the caller can say his name or message & you can answer it

  8. with regard to spam and robocalls, you can go to website
NOMOROBO and register both your landline and cell phones to stop
robo/spam calls. If a call comes through, you can go to website and
list the call and future calls will be stopped. Service is free.
