Letter: Attention Students

Hi, I work at Costco and take Route 70 home at 5:30 pm each night.

I’m writing because I have a concern for the young girls I see walking home from school. It was so dark already at 5:30 and there are no sidewalks and limited lighting in the area between the bank and WAWA on the west bound side, cars are going so fast and the u- turn at Vermont Ave is like a speedway!

Tonight I saw a high school aged girl walking alone on the shoulder with dark clothes on and a dark backpack on and I was so concerned for her safety.

So many people read TLS so I was hoping you would please put a warning to wear something reflective and be extra cautious of the traffic and walking past the woods alone. I’m the mother of two now adult daughters myself, so I guess it’s the mom in me to worry.

Sincerely,
Doreen Pugliese

  1. Thanks so much Doreen for your care and concern. May you be blessed with only goodness and may your daughters make you very proud. See you at Costco ????

  2. I suggest that any person who walks the roads at night takes Doreen’s message extremely seriously! why wait for tragedy to happen? And don’t think it won’t happen to you- because that’s what every other person thought until……

  3. Ditto for the many students, mostly young men, on pine street at 7-9 pm when I get home from work
    I can’t see you, it’s frightening
Please stay on the side, and reflectors!!! Let’s prevent accidents and heartbreak.

  4. Thanks for finally writing about this!!!!!!?????
Its really crazy and not a joke not just 1 spot but all over veery person has the responsibility to do something about this it doesn’t have to take tragedy g-d forbid for something to be done …..

  5. This is a danger everywhere in lakewood. Kids, teens and adults wear dark clothing and walk at night. Parts of Lakewood are poorly lit up just know you are barely seen by drivers!!! Add rain on top of the darkness and you have a recipe for disaster. Please everyone an ounce of prevention goes a long way. Stay safe!!

  6. Doreen , I am with you 100%.
Thanks so much for taking the time to write this letter. Let’s hope that people will be careful when walking at night.

  7. Thank you. Parents take heed. Make sure your teens all have reflective belts to wear. Boys stand on the side of the ride very close to the on coming cars trying to hitch and one can hardly see them. PLEASE – we don’t need any more tragedies.

  8. You are so very right Doreen. But also the amount of young boys hitch hiking is awful. How can you dare? There are people out there that will pull you in a car. Does not matter that your a boy. Its also against the law….I do not care who you are, You should be scared to be along on any road…People disappear all the time today..Its not safe on the roads for any girl or boy to be walking. If you think your with a friend and its safe, it is not…..
