Letter: Anti-Semitism at Spirit Airlines Gate in Atlantic City

We live in Miami and came to New Jersey for a weekend party.

We were returning home ACY-MIA on flight 3104 scheduled for 2:10pm. We arrived early at our gate, Gate 10.

As we know from our frequent travels, we need to get a green tag for our stroller. We went straight to the counter to get our tag.

Before even opening our mouths, we were greeted by the gate agent with hate and contempt. He started berating us that “your (Jewish) community never follow the rules. You don’t listen”, and repeated those hateful comments again. Following that, he was outright mean to to the Jews waiting patiently behind us on line.

When I asked him for his name and his badge number, he refused and threatened to call the supervisor on me. (I did not want the situation to escalate or to give the agent an excuse to throw my entire family off the flight, so I just kept quiet and moved on).

I was able to catch a quick glance at his name tag and caught the name (moderated). I was able to take a picture of him as well (see attached). We have several families who witnessed this incident and can testify accordingly and documented the same. They will be filling their own reports.

This antisemitic incident must be addressed and rectified. Otherwise I will be filling a lawsuit against all affiliated parties. I have seen in the news several such Antisemitic stories with Spirit Airlines representatives, but did not think it would happen to me.

Unfortunately, as we have seen with Spirit, anti semitism is alive and well. All four of my grandparents were/are Holocaust survivors, where they spent several years of hell in the Nazi Concentration Camps. With broken bones and spirits they survived and came to America, the land of the free, hoping desperately for a better life, a life free of persecution and anti semitism. Unfortunately today’s experience is a sad reminder that hatred and profiling still exists.

  1. I noticed the town “atlantic city” in your letter.
If I recall correctly, a few years ago someone in that town stole an ATM machine and tried in a violent way to take the ATM on a NJ Transit bus. Feel free to google that story. I left out certain details. After reading all the details, you will probably come to a conclusion, that A. C. is not a safe place.
I am truly happy for your family that you made it out safely.

    • I just googled the word city and I found that in other cities in the world, people spend many hours learning Torah, and others perform lots of Gemillus Chesed.
That just shows how great cities are, and Atlantic City must be an outlier.

  2. Maybe find out if there are any more details to his concern. Is it that Jewish people don’t listen to rules, or maybe they just need more accommodations. (Maybe it’s easier to get dogs and cats onto planes than babies?! And animals don’t cry etc…)

  3. Maybe there is truth to what he is saying and you persay weren’t wrong but people in the past made a Chillul Hashem. (it is wrong to generalize everyone)
Why do people deny how negative the impact of a Chillul Hashem is not just what Seforim right but in practicality?

  4. atlantic city is a city of sodom and it is unsafe for anyone to be there among other reasons because it is full of mean and corrupt people without any moral values or decent restrictions who are liable to discriminate on the basis of gender, race, or political affiliation and this should be brought to the attention of spirit airlines so that they get the mean out of spirit and keep the good in spirit

  5. I agree with both sides. The airline has to treat every single person decently and must be called to task for being nasty and for stereotyping a person into a “community” and assuming negative things. And people have to be extremely careful to behave appropriately and pleasantly and make a kiddush hashem. Sometimes when you travel in a large group you feel like you’re surrounded by familiar people and don’t watch your behavior.
