A quick-thinking burglary victim helped police catch the suspect.
On August 8th Officers responded to a Sampson Avenue home after the resident came home and found an unidentified Hispanic male burglarizing her home.
She confronted the man – who was holding her piggy bank – but ignored her as he walked out of her home. The victim, was able to take the suspect’s picture as he fled on a bicycle.
A picture of the suspect was then distributed throughout the police department.
One of the officers recognized the suspect as a man he had several encounters with approximately 10 years ago and provided the name Victor Velez Sr to Detective Nathaniel Reyes.
Further investigation by Det. Reyes led to charges of Burglary and Theft for Velez, however, police could not locate him or a valid address.
Yesterday afternoon at approximately 4:30 pm, Officer Dennis Dowden, who primarily works the downtown area, observed Velez at the New Jersey Transit Bus Terminal. He was arrested without incident and transported to the Ocean County Jail in lieu of $5,000 no 10% bail.
