LPD: After a several month investigation, a Jackson Township man has been arrested and charged in a fraudulent scheme to obtain new cell phones.
In January of 2016, two Lakewood businessmen reported to the police that they had been charged for seven new iPhone 6’s that they had not received after visiting the customer service center at a third party Verizon Retailer in Toms River.
The investigation, conducted by Det. Michael Cavallo, revealed that 22 year old Amir H. of Jackson, was adding unauthorized mobile devices to customers’ accounts. He would then take the new devices and sell them for his own profit.
As a result, Amir was charged with Forgery and Criminal Computer Activity. He was arrested last evening at the Lakewood Police Station and released after posting $20,000 bail.
Additional information obtained during the investigation with the help of the third party retailer, Diamond Wireless, of Toms River, revealed the man is suspected of selling upwards of 50 other phones.
The Lakewood Police Department is urging other customers to examine their bill for unauthorized charges dating back to 2015.
