Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles reviewing dozens of Your suggestions submitted via TLS ‘Ask The Mayor’ column

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Cross traffic does not stop‘ sign is a great, easy and inexpensive idea!

Since there are many intersections that now have 4 way stop signs [definitely enhances safety], it is sometimes difficult to know, or even sometimes easy to forget that a certain intersection is only a regular 2 way stop.

One example, Seventh Street is a heavily traveled road. Coming west from Somerset Ave, the next 4 intersections are all 4 way stops. When you finally get to Lexington Ave. it is easy to forget that this 5th intersection is a regular 2 way stop [happens to me all the time!] A ‘Cross traffic does not stop’ would definitely be in order.

Another easy fix to help congestion is coming North on Cedarbridge Ave and South on Clifton, at the corner of Main St [ Rte 88 ] where there is almost always traffic, making a right turn onto Main St, while the East and West drivers are turning with the green turning light, should be permitted, as there is absolutely no safety issue in this scenario, again a simple and relatively inexpensive fix to a daily traffic (and safety) issue.

Thanks for your Help.

A suggestion, for residents who drive daily, usually down the same roads, is a great idea for regular people who see the same things all the time and could make certain suggestions better than a Traffic engineer who just comes a one or times and cannot really see what goes on everyday.

All the best

Yossi

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning Yossi,

I agree that the Cross Traffic sign was a good idea. I’d like to thank the resident who suggested it again. I also agree that folks who travel the roads daily have a unique perspective on ways to improve things. That is one of the reasons I enjoy this column so much. It allows me to hear from the folks directly affected by issues and try to implement some of their ideas. In fact, I have an email to go through with a list of 46 suggestions recently submitted to TLS.

The Rt 88 issue is a bit more complex, because it is a state highway controlled by the county. I will have it looked at.

Thanks again.

Ray

  1. We need a follow up column.

Myself as well as many others have asked questions and made suggestions that were featured here in this column.

The mayor replied that he will look into it, and speak with the proper dept.

    We never heard back.

Please institute a follow up column, and post the questions that were asked 6 months ago, and let us know what was done.

    Thank you

  2. Maybe it’s time for a townhall
Style meeting with the mayor about the roads in Lakewood. Let a preselected group of citizens from across Lakewood voice their suggestions & grievances with the current situation. This meeting should be held every other month so that the Mayor has time to look into a suggestion & put it into action. The way this is going, maybe our grandchildren will benefit from this conversation. By then, Lakewood will then have 500,000 residents & the roads will be a complete wreck.

We need a bold plan to save Lakewood from reaching a complete standstill.

  3. A few weeks ago someone asked about the traffic light at Clifton and First street. However nothing was done about it yet to coordinate it with the Main street light. It is exeremly annoying. PLEASE PLEASE do so make that change. I travel through that intersection several times a day and it takes up at least 10 minutes of may time throughout the day
