Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Traffic-Related Questions

The following is several ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s responses. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

We need an arrow light on the Vermont and 70 light. It’s horrible to make a left turn from Vermont to 70 west.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning,

I agree with you.

We are waiting on final approval from the state for the reconfiguration of the intersection on both sides of 70.

Ray

Question:

Dear Mayor Coles,

I am writing to you today to express my deepest gratitude for all that you do for our community. Your tireless efforts and dedication to making our town a better place are truly appreciated by all of us, and I wanted to take a moment to thank you for everything.

In particular, I wanted to point out an issue I’m seeing. The intersection of Forest Ave and County line doesn’t have any clear lanes for turning left or right or even going straight, causing much confusion at that intersection. Painting turning lanes on the intersection in question would greatly alleviate much congestion and confusion there. As someone who frequently travels through this intersection, I have noticed much danger for drivers there. I believe that by painting dedicated turning lanes, we could greatly improve the safety and efficiency of this intersection.

I understand that there may be some logistical and financial challenges to making this project a reality, but I am confident that with your leadership and support, we can find a way to make it happen.

Once again, I want to thank you for all that you do for our community. Your leadership and vision have helped to make our town a better place, and I know that you can continue to make positive changes.

With Thanks,

A Driver.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning,

I will ask engineering and traffic & safety to look into this. Since it is a county road we will also need to get their approval.

Thanks

Ray

Question:

Any plans on paving East 5th Street, which is one huge disaster? It’s like a roller coaster. It’s literally full of potholes.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning,

The contract to pave East 5th St was just awarded. We expect the paving to be done in June.

Thanks

Ray

  1. Any plans on paving E 5th Street..? It’s like a roller coaster. It’s literally full of potholes.
Mr. Mayor, before you pave that street, can you please inform my friend of your plans? He actually thrives on those potholes.
Whenever his 7-year-old son asks him to take him to the amusement park to enjoy the thrilling, breathtaking rides, he, instead, takes him to East 5th Street to enjoy the roller coaster ride.
The kid has the thrill of his life, and the father, who’s on a very tight budget, doesn’t have to pay a cent for the ride…, except to repair his automobile tires every few months or so.
I just think my friend should be informed about road repair since it will affect him dearly.
And someone should also inform the kid that the pothole roller coaster ride that he has grown accustomed to will no longer be available. He deserves to know the truth.
    Thanx.

RT 88 and Monmouth is one of the worst intersections in town. It desperately needs a light. Can you send a letter to the Mayor

  3. No matter how many traffic lights or stop signs that are put up around this town, one thing for sure Lakewood’s traffic problem has met a dead end. Lakewood was meant to be a quiet small suburban town. These problems will only spill into surrounding towns (Toms River, Jackson, Brick, and Manchester).
