Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Traffic Questions

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Dear Honorable Mayor Coles,

Would it be possible to make a right turn left turn and straight lanes on oak Street westbound facing New Hampshire. Unfortunately, people do not know what a turn signal is and it is very hard to tell if a car is going straight or making a left. If there were two lanes it would facilitate traffic on the other side trying to make left turns.

Thank you so much

Marvin

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good afternoon,

We have requested the county either install these lanes themselves or allow us to do so. We are awaiting their response. I did ask our engineer to remind them about this request when I received your email.

Ray

Question:

Dear Mayor Ray,

Thank you for caring!! I wish other mayors and officials learned from you.

I guess the new light at the corner of Vermont and Locust was important to install , but the times of North-south to east-west ate not equal. The light is green much much longer when you are driving on locust. A car coming off the 70 onto Vermont in the direction towards TR or the other way around to go to the 70 has to wait a long time .It became such a nuisance and is becoming a real bottleneck.

Can you please change the traffic lights that should be evenly green on both ways.

Thank you

A thankful member of your community.

P.s. forgive me if my grammar is not perfect

Response from Mayor Coles:

Thanks for writing. Many times when new lights are installed, we run into issues like this. I have asked engineering to look into the timing and see if there is anything that can be done to alleviate the backups

Thanks

Ray

  1. “Many times when new lights are installed, we run into issues like this.”
I’ve wondered several times when new traffic lights are installed what exactly is the logic behind the timing of lights.
For instance the light that was installed by 1st and Clifton a few years ago. The light wasn’t coordinated with the rest of the lights on Clifton so it caused major backups for a few weeks until enough people complained and they turned it into a blinking light.

  2. I think instead of letting engineers decide how traffic lights should operate, let the drivers in this town have their input. They know better because they drive all the time around here.
