Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Suggestion for intersections

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Dear Mayor,

I drive often past some intersections in town and wanted to propose an idea for those intersections.

OAK and NEW HAMPSHIRE.

ON OAK there are 2 Lanes The left lane is for Cars to make a left and Go Straight. The Right Lane is for cars to turn Right. I am suggesting to ease up congestion that the right lane should be for cars to go straight and for right turns and the left lane should be for cars turning left. They have this by Pine and the nine and I think it seems to work out well.

The same idea would be for the Intersection Chestnut and the Nine.

Also perhaps to add a left turning lane on the nine by spruce and/ or lengthening the left turning lane by prospect and the 9.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning,

I will run this by Traffic & Safety and see what they say.

Thank you for suggesting it.

Ray

  1. Left Turning lane with a right turning lane on spruce and route 9. I was at the intersection today and a woman’s car wasn’t centered well. It took her almost 7 minutes to turn left while no one was even able to turn right because she was blocking. The line of cars was all the way down the block, not to mention the deafening of honking

  2. pine and US 9 (@the9) has a no turn on red so left turning lane makes sense oak and new hampshire turns on red so right turning lane makes sense

  3. Comment on Oak/New Hampshire: Besides for the easing of congestion, this switch is necessary just to stop accidents!!! Every time I drive there I see almost-crashes. When you are waiting to turn left onto New Hampshire from Oak (Albert side), you have to wait for the cars opposite you going straight to finish… but because that left-turning lane is mixed with cars going straight, it’s hard to tell … The Right lane should definitely be for cars going right and straight and the left lane for cars turning left only. Both ways on Oak turning onto New Hampshire.

  4. @agree I don’t know what you are talking about! The visibility is great as long as you drive like a normal person should; stop by the line and inch out SLOWLY!! But yes, focusing on your phone can make for poor visibility
