Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Speed limit on Avenue Of The States

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Dear Mr. Mayor, thank you so much for this wonderful forum. I have already gained so much from it and it really shows that you care.

I wanted to discuss the speed limit on Avenue Of The States. It is currently 30 miles an hour and everyone speeds quite dangerously down it. I personally feel that you can drive at least 40-45 miles an hour over there quite safely. And I think that causes people to ignore the limit entirely and go dangerously high speeds on that road. I was wondering if there was anything that can be done, especially since I see many similar roads that safely have a higher speed limit.

Sincerely, a thankful citizen.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good afternoon. I will ask Traffic and Safety to look at the road and determine that the speed limit is appropriate for the road. Then we will do some enhanced signage and put out the speed board. Some targeted enforcement with warnings may help also.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

I’ve never seen anyone driving under 45 on that road. I personally do 50 with ease.

I agree- the 30mph limit is unreasonably slow.
