Question:
Hi Mayor Coles.
First of all, thank you for the hard work & stress that you go through on a daily basis for the residents of Lakewood.
On the subject that you recently responded to, I would like to know what standard the builders/utility companies are held to, with the roads that they dig into.
They seem to be very unprofessional in the way they close up the street.
Just to contrast, when there is roadwork done on Route 9, the patches are done much more evenly.
Thank you for responding.
Response from Mayor Coles:
Good morning,
We recently upgraded the standards which contractors and utility companies must adhere to when opening streets. Previously they would simply patch the street & move on. Now they are required to use an infrared patch which basically melts the new and old asphalt together to make a seamless patch. In many cases though, this is a 2 step process. Once the work is done, a preliminary paving job is done. Over a period of several months this may settle. Then the utility company comes back and does the final overlay. In the past there was no good method of tracking this. We have told our engineering company to prioritize the follow-up to make sure the temporary patches are in fact temporary.

Hmm…. on Adams St right off of Miller Rd NJAWC – New Jersey Water – did work on Rosh Hashana (September time). They opened up half the road. They closed it and did not even run a roller over it. Driving is treacherous. Walking is painful and biking is excruciating. I don’t think they are coming back. Where would we lodge a complaint on that? Thank you.
Why cant they do it like on route 9 where it not require them to return month’s later.
Lakewood is not set with supervisors to check up months later to see that they returned to finish off the patch.
Actually lakewood started becoming very on top of this…
I’m just wondering why the township has a double standard. Why when they redo a 50 year old road why don’t they replace it the same way that the builders are obligated to replace it. Builders do 12″ deep replacement and when the township repaves they only do 2 or 3″ replacement.
This is a simple question for the good of all. Is there any way this can be forwarded to the mayor?
And what is the statute of limitations? The township should apply this to past construction as well. Can we go back 10 years? 5? That should save the town a pretty penny….
Part of the issues in Lakewood are simply, because Lakewood was not set up to serve such a large population. Changes need to be implemented to reflect the growth and all the baggage that comes along. We are lucky to have a mayor who really cares and is mentch.
