Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: New Hampshire Ave. x Rt. 88

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question: Hi Mr. Mayor,

I have written to you about this in the past, but I don’t think anything has changed yet. In the morning hours, between 8:45 to 9: 30, there is a ton of traffic coming from route 88 turning right onto New Hampshire as there are many schools and workplaces in that area. The traffic gets backed up all the way from Swarthmore until the Ocean Pointe development and sometimes even further. I think that there may be a way to fix it by extending the timing of the left turning signal onto Swarthmore. A friend of mine suggested that the green turning arrow should go on again before the light turns red. That will allow more cars to turn. As of now the turn signal only allows 4 to 5 cars to turn which ends up blocking the left lane all the way to Route 88. This can solve a lot of the congestion in my opinion.

Another idea I thought of, although a lot more costly, is to make a turning ramp onto New Hampshire from route 88 with a yield sign just like there is on the opposite corner of the road. This will keep the traffic flowing better.

Thanks in advance for all your help! And thanks for all the previous fixes you have done for our town!

Response from Mayor Coles: Good morning,

New Hampshire is a county road, so I asked our engineering department to contact the county about your suggestion. I think it is a great idea. Hopefully they will agree!

  1. Cedarbridge needs a free arrow by clover street!!

I know it’s a county road, but that’s why we have elected officials – so they can go to the county for us!
