The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].
Question:
Hi,
the lights by squankum and kennedy, and squankum and county are not synced which causes a huge backup through the intersection.
Is there anything that can be done?
Response from Mayor Coles:
I will ask our engineers to contact the county and ask them to adjust the sequencing

It is synced. That when the cars coming down Kennedy making a right on squankum have a green it’s a green for left onto county. It’s necessary to leave like that.
Agreed that it is synced. The problem is that there’s no turning light from Kennedy onto Squankum when turning onto County Line. There should be a turning light there that syncs with the turning light from Squankum to County Line. And it should be a “no turn on red” from Kennedy to Squankum for other times since many times people block the intersection trying to make the turn into the turning lane.
The problem is the cars from kennedy make a right turn onto squankum blocking the intersection, so the cars from squnakum that have a green light cannot proceed! There should be no right on red from Kennedy onto squankum! It is a disaster daily.
A bigger problem is the backup in traffic on Kennedy due to only one right-turning lane onto Squankum from Kennedy due to the many cars waiting to make a left onto County line. This is especially problematic for those wishing to continue on Squankum past County Line. If there were 2 right turn lanes on Kennedy turning onto Squankum, those wishing to continue straight after the turn would be able to do so sooner, AND the backup for all cars, even those intending to turn left onto county line would be relieved considerably.
Another way to reduce backup would be to direct those on Kennedy who want to continue east on County Line to continue straight on Kennedy past Squankum, behind the strip of stores, and for there to be a left turning light when they reach Squankum to make it possible to turn left.
