Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: EV Charging Stations in Lakewood

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Dear Mr Mayor:

Lately, many of us have jumped on the EV wagon and purchased electric vehicles to save money and keep the environment clean. However, it seems NJ is lagging behind and there aren’t enough places to charge our cars. Are there any plans in Lakewood to set up a Tesla/ EV station?

Sincerely,

Michael

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning,

The charging station situation really boils down to 2 issues, charging stations on private property and stations located on public property.

We have been hesitant to add stations to downtown, because they do cut down on the amount of parking. We are however adding a substantial number of parking spaces on the 2nd street lot in the near future. Once we begin this process, our plan is to add charging stations in several township lots. Those exact locations have not been decided yet.

I have also been speaking with a local engineering firm to help locate state and federal grant monies that will make it more attractive for our local business to add these stations in their lots.

While most folks also charge their vehicles at home, this will hopefully make it more attractive for our residents to make the switch to EV’s

Thanks

Ray

  1. It’s pretty worthless to put level 2 chargers in municipal lots. They work nicely at home to charge overnight or maybe in a business to charge for 8 hours during the day. But charging for half an hour while shopping doesn’t get you much maybe 5 or 6 percent.

  2. 95% of newlyweds are renters of which their landlords don’t want to spend $1,200 on installing a 240V E.V. Line to the parking spot ( unless they live in a low income housing complex there will be free E.V. chargers installed from Sen. Booker ) having public E.V. chargers will encourage young newlyweds to take advantage of the falling E.V. prices and enjoy the safe , clean, high performance, maintenance free Electric Vehicles. And installing E.V. chargers is one thing , but it’s another thing to maintain them as the majority of public E.V. chargers are broken or out-of-order, the township will need a full time electrician to maintain them.

    • Safe clean performance , that is a myth . Do some research of what it takes for just one vehicle for the various elements required for the batteries of EV”S , batteries only store energy they do not create it , it has to be charged over and over ,that energy comes from the electrical grid ,coal , oil or nuclear.

  3. Sadly the batteries of the EV’s after being used up cannot be recycled and are horrible for the environment, much worse than the pollution from gas.

  4. Dear Mayor Coles,
I (once again) have a brilliant idea that will totally transform Lakewood for the better.
We are very conscious about the environment, the ability to charge vehicles with the least amount of polluters like coal or gas & the health of our citizens.
Which got me thinking. Did you know the stationary bikes used to exercise can create electricity? They can & are currently being used for that purpose.
My idea is we B”H have thousands of men in Yeshiva but are sitting idle for hours learning.
Why don’t we replace the tables & chairs in the Bais Medrash with exercise bikes?
Imagine a study hall where the Rabbi & his pupils are learning Torah, burning calories & creating clean energy all at the same time. It’s a win-win-win for all.
People wanting to charge their cars can pull up to any Yeshiva, plug in & spend the charging time exercising & learning.
Perhaps there are government grants available to pay for the cost of conversion to bikes. We can also sell excess electricity to JCPL where instead of us paying them, they will pay us.

  5. EVs are mostly not worthwhile.
Why do you think people are not buying them like hotcakes? People mainly get them for the tax credit, which has created an artificial market for them. I highly doubt very many give a hoot about the environment.
Even the big-shot environmentalists only “care” when there’s money involved.
