The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].
Question:
Dear Mayor Ray Coles,
I am writing to bring attention to a safety concern regarding the lack of sidewalks on both sides of Hurley Road.
There are currently no sidewalks for pedestrians, which forces people to walk along or very close to the roadway. This creates a serious safety concern, especially for children, families, and anyone walking along the road.
I respectfully ask that the town consider installing sidewalks on both sides of Hurley Road, or at minimum evaluate the area and determine what can be done to make it safer for pedestrians.
I believe adding sidewalks would greatly improve pedestrian safety and make the road more accessible for residents and anyone who needs to walk in the area.
Thank you for taking the time to consider this concern. I would appreciate any information regarding whether there are plans or discussions about addressing the sidewalk situation on Hurley Road.
A concerned citizen
Response from Mayor Coles:
Good afternoon
Public works will install asphalt walkways to provide a safe pathway along Hurley.
Thank you for reaching out about this.
Ray

The only sensible solution for hurley and central intersection is a large roundabout. If designed properly, and people yeilded to traffic in the circle (which will be hard for Lakewood drivers to learn how to do), there will be a continuous flow of traffic through the intersection. It will also create a safe place for pedestrians to walk and cross.
I know this will take a lot of coordination between the state, county, and township. The land is private and JCPL owned. The storage of poles and wire can be relocated to a different storage yard but the electrical transformers and 5G tower will be another hurdle.
Maybe the township can use some of the revenue from the increased property taxes to make this happen. Will increase the quality of life of both the drivers and pedestrians in town.
Here’s a design I made witha 3 minute conversation with ChatGPT, hopefully the civil engineers can do a better job.
Was expecting it to be the county road answer – Maybe get the county to pay for it – isnt the town strapped for cash?
