Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Crossing guard

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Hi, Mr. Mayor

Thank you for taking action!

I am grateful that the Thurs. night train beeping has definitely decreased- though not totally eliminated- since someone brought it up in this forum.

Question: Over the past couple of weeks, there was someone (crossing guard?) stationed at the corner of James & Williams to assist with traffic at that otherwise impossible corner.

He was doing an excellent job of keeping traffic flowing smoothly there… when I pass by there usually between 2-3 pm.

Recently, he has not been there.. and the effects are evident all around James, Sunset, Williams is backed up till Evian/Omni, and all surrounding streets are a mess.

Is there anyway to get him back?

Thanks,

Tova

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning

We were able to post the crossing guard there over the summer because school was out. Now that school is open again the guard had to be reassigned to his normal station. Unfortunately we are every short handed on crossing guards right now. The police department is advertising for more guards & I am hoping that we can have someone back at this location quickly. If anyone reading this is interested in becoming a crossing guard, please contact the police departing for an application. It is a very important & rewarding position.

Thanks

Ray

  1. Oak and route 9 needs a crossing guard as well! Sometimes he is there and sometimes not. To make a left turn onto route 9 from Oak is horrendous. With Oak having about 10 schools on the block I would think it would qualify for a crossing guard near a school.

  2. Perhaps until a crossing guard is found, LPD LCSW or chaverim could spare an officer/member for the 2 busiest hours of the day. It would be a tremendous help for traffic flow around town. And it would show that officials are taking the traffic problems seriously and not just passing it off for someone else to deal with.
