Question:
Dear Mayor Coles,
For the last while, every Tuesday, which is garbage pickup day in my neighborhood, has been extremely upsetting to me and my neighbors. The garbage truck leaves a trail of disgusting garbage juice which smells awful. Also every few feet a large splatter of bits of mushy garbage. This then bakes in the hot sun. We live in a beautiful town and pay dearly for that privilege with extremely high taxes and we cannot even enjoy a simple stroll around the block. (Until the next rain).
I have spoken to public works about this and have been told that is the way the trucks work- they leak a trail of garbage. I am pretty willing to bet that Holmdel and Colts Neck and even Toms River and other beautiful towns around here do not experience this. It is really embarrassing and disgraceful not to mention extremely unsanitary and unhealthy.
In addition, the problem seems to be getting worse lately. As mayor, you can surely do something about this so we can be proud of our town and not cringe when our out of town friends come to visit.
I would appreciate your response.
Thank you. Rose.
Response from Mayor Coles:
Hi,
We checked the truck that picked up your area and found there were some rusted out spots in the body which allowed water to leak out. We have taken this truck out of service for repair, so you should not have that problem any longer. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
Take Care
Ray

@lakewoodscoop Anyway to get my question posted? I sent it 2 x and no response or publication
In my area , every week . the truck stops and “digests” all the garbage right in front of my house. This leave a massive puddle pf stinky liquid all over the street.
A mayor for the people.
Mr. mayor, I am utterly impressed with your quick response and to the writer good for you for pointing out something that we all thought was the norm
I hope you live where I live so that we won’t have garbage juice anymore either!
This also happens on my block. It is very smelly and as we have pickup on Thursday it doesn’t make our Shabbos so pleasant . Yes it seems to have worsen in the last year.
to bd and md–
I am the original writer of this letter, and Mayor Coles got back to me Literally THE NEXT DAY after i sent it in. and within a week, this response. SO if you also have this problem, speak up! He is really so helpful.
Thanks Mayor!
its pathetic that this issues requires the mayor’s involvement. when the resident calls public works why isn’t it resolved??
I have have this problem too about stinky garbage juice being left along the roadway when my stuff is picked up. It has happened for several years. I thought it was being done deliberately because my neighbors did not experience the same problem. I still believe it is deliberate.
On a different subject, when will Lakewood Township update their holiday pickup schedule on the township website and the Department of Public Works website? It has not been updated in 10 years or more. It does not go through all days of the week when there is a holiday involved. For example, if a holiday falls on a Monday, what happens to the normal pickup on Wednesday? The websites tell you nothing about it. However I will tell you that if a holiday falls on a Monday, your normal pickup will not be on Wednesday. It will be on Thursday.
