Question:
Hi Mr Mayor.
Thanks for having this platform as a place for suggestions! If I may make a suggestion. Every morning I drive on Rt 88 towards New Hampshire.
Recently there has been a lot of traffic building up from the traffic light turning left onto Swarthmore, which although it may sound surprising can reach all the way to Rt 88. The reason for this traffic is that there are many schools/companies located in the Swarthmore area and many people come from Rt 88 to get there.
A suggestion which I would like to put forward is extending the amount of time the left turning light from New Hampshire to Swarthmore is on. Currently only 3-4 cars are able to go (which as we know if the first cars driver is not paying attention- no one can go). The line of cars waiting for that left also takes up the whole left lane so cars going straight are stuck squeezing into the right lane. This is only necessary from around 8:30 am until 9:30 am. In the afternoon the problem exists the other direction- turning left onto Rt 88 from New Hampshire. The traffic in that direction builds up almost till Swarthmore. The time of that traffic starts at approximately 1:45 and goes till 4:00 PM. A fix for that would be extending the timing for the left turning light onto Rt 88. Another suggestion although not as practical, would be to either make a green right arrow onto New Hampshire from Rt 88 and/ or make the right lane a right turn only.
Thanks so much Mr Coles.
Response from Mayor Coles:
We have requested the county look into extending the timing at the turning signals and to also look into extending the turning lanes themselves at Cedarbridge & Rt 88.
