The Lakewood Fire Department will host its annual Fire Prevention Expo on Monday, July 20, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the BlueClaws parking lot, offering families, camps, and community members an interactive day focused on fire safety and emergency preparedness.
The event is being presented by the Lakewood Board of Fire Commissioners in conjunction with Fire Chief Jonathan Yahr, Fire Prevention Specialist Sima Clapman, and members of the Lakewood Fire Department.
This year’s expo marks a new approach for the department, as officials have moved the traditional Fire Prevention Day from October to the summer in an effort to increase participation from local camps and families. The department also intentionally scheduled the event during the Nine Days to provide an educational and recreational opportunity for the community during that time.
Attendees can expect a wide range of live demonstrations, emergency vehicles, interactive exhibits, safety displays, giveaways, and hands-on activities designed to promote fire and life safety.
Among the featured presentations will be a demonstration of the nationally recognized “Close Before You Doze” campaign, which highlights the lifesaving difference a closed bedroom door can make during a house fire. Additional demonstrations will showcase emergency response techniques and give attendees a behind-the-scenes look at the work performed by first responders.
The expo will also include representatives from numerous local agencies, emergency response organizations, utility partners, and community groups, allowing residents to meet first responders, ask questions, and learn about the many resources available throughout the community.
The free event is open to all ages, with activities and educational opportunities geared toward children, parents, and seniors alike.
Officials encourage local camps and organizations planning to attend with large groups to notify the Fire Prevention Bureau in advance by calling 732-364-5151 ext. 6107 or emailing [email protected] to help organizers prepare for attendance.

This is really exciting! I hope to attend. The idea to switch from National Fire Prevention Week is very smart. October is a very busy time for everyone. It’s holiday season, schools just started, and the weather is starting to get chilly, and rainy, which actually caused this past year’s to get canceled. Doing it in the summer, especially during the 9 days, is a very good idea! It will also be much better because of the change of location- now it’s at Blueclaws. Thank you to everyone behind this event, and thank you to all our firefighters for all you do. Looking forward!!
