The Lakewood Township’s Department of Public Works is running low on salt, TLS has learned.
Committeeman and DPW liaison Ray Coles tells TLS the low salt level is attributed to the brutal weather and multiple snow and ice storms Lakewood has experienced this past month. In fact, February has been the coldest on record, Coles says.
The township orders approximately 2,000 tons of salt a year, but this past month’s weather has nearly depleted the stock.
Coles says the township has some supply of Calcium Chloride, but says the DPW would rather not use that stock unless absolutely necessary due to the cost.
The Committeeman added that the Township is also still owed approximately 300 tons of salt from this year’s order, which is expected to arrive today.
That salt is expected to be sufficient for the next couple of weeks, Coles says.
Last year, townships and cities nationwide were scrambling to get their hands on salt shipments after a foreign-flagged vessel carrying the salt was held up, as reported on TLS at the time.
Coles also asked that TLS notify residents of the potential inclement weather this Thursday, which may require plowing and salting. With residents walking around the streets, Coles is asking residents to pay extra attention and use extreme caution.

No salt cause the town is too poor to get some…it’s a shame

Only in lakewood they run out of salt they refuse to use. Normal twp’s plow and salt because they’re afraid of lawsuits for endangering the population’s life and limb. But the salt savings will be passed on to the taxpayers so no worries.
The township should use sugar, it will sweeten all the bitter people’s outlook. The township does a good job plowing a town almost as hard to plow as Manhattan. The roads were built to handle a 20th of the cars it does and that takes a toll on the roads. The more salt, the more holes, the more cars the more holes.
this is outrageous!!! what’s the excuse??? did u see the roads on sunday ? sheets of ice!! not enough salt?? so raise taxes AGAIN!!
saturday night was terrible, the roads were a sheet of ice, and it lasted into sunday. you would think that with this many storms in one season they would get it right. if thursday is snow – with all the traffic expected, they should be out there salting non stop. but we’ll see.

Amazing how everyone thinks salt is the fix to all problems.. Salt will keep ice from freezing but you have to factor in all different variables.. How fast is it snowing ,how cold is it , did it snow then rain and temps drop (like on Sunday) where it iced over like a crust on top .. Just because you put salt down doesn’t mean that streets will look like Miami..
Please have the dept of Public works fill in the holes and I mean huge holes as you turn into Clearstream off of Hope Chapel. It is horrible. You have to give Public Works credit for their work. this has been a very difficult winter. Put your self in the place of one of the workers then tell me how terrible they are. give credit where credit is due…..

The claim that Febuary has been historically icy is a red herring. Consider that Nov Dec and Jan. were historically mild!!!
