Over the last few months, Lakewood has seen a rise in cases of Varicella, more commonly known as chickenpox, CHEMED says.
“Since the beginning of October, incidence of chickenpox has been unusually high, with more than 50 local children contracting this highly contagious disease,” the center said. “According to data compiled by the Ocean County Health Department, a significant majority of these children were not vaccinated against the illness.”
“Infants, adolescents, adults and pregnant women are most at risk of developing Varicella-related complications. Serious complications can include bacterial infections, pneumonia, dehydration, brain infection or inflammation, and bleeding issues. Chickenpox can even result in death, especially in seriously-affected adults. A significant percentage of the healthy adults who died from Varicella contracted the disease from their unvaccinated children.”
Because chickenpox is so contagious, not immunizing your children against it is a risk not only for them, but for others as well, CHEMED said.
“CHEMED pediatricians strongly advise that if your children have not yet been immunized, you should visit your healthcare provider immediately and get the Varicella vaccination. Immunizing your children will help protect them from chickenpox and its related symptoms and possible complications.”

If all Lakewood pediatricians but stop accepting family that don’t vaccinate, we wouldn’t have these issues…
And for all those who for some reason are against vaccinating please do us a favor, if you want to expose your child to chicken pox please don’t send them to school/playgroup while you wait for theirs to come out. Keep them home until they get it and are completely over with it. If you do send them to school you are being extremely SELFISH!!!
Many people from.brooklyn who are moving into the community do not vaccinate against chicken pox as it is not mandates in NY.
Plenty of people in a local pediatrician don’t either vaccinate don’t blame nyers!
My daughter was vaccinated and got chicken pox which means its not totally effective. Its better for them to get chicken pox when they’re young then when they’re old and you find out the vaccine didnt work
My daughter was vaccinated and got chicken pox anyways. Means vould of been unimmune when an adult
who cares? If you are vaccinated – you shouldnt get it. if you do- its a hoax. otherwise whats the point??
The intent of chickenpox vaccine is to either prevent disease, OR lessen severity of disease if you get sick. Chickenpox can be especially bad for pregnant women and infants, something our community should be thinking about.
Do some of you realize that vaccines aren’t 100% effective? There are published efficacy rates for all vaccines, and that’s one of the reasons why herd immunity is so vital. That’s also the reason why booster shots are recommended, and in some cases schdules for booster shots are updated…to improve immunity.
Immunizations are a danger – stop them all !!!!!
My children were exposed to chicken pox a few years ago. Only my baby, who was under a year at the time and not yet able to receive the vaccination, came down with it!
It’s fine if you don’t want to vaccinate your child against serious diseases and illnesses, but for the love of god think of those with compromised immune systems and infants who can’t be vaccinated. They don’t have a choice.
Do you realize that the vaccine is not completely effective and if you get chicken pox as an adult, which is called shingles, its much more dangerous? The vaccine loses it power over time and very likely actually getting the chicken pox as a child is the most effective way not to get shingles. No one knows the answers to these questions, so why are we instituting policies so that big pharma can make money. For the vast majority of the population, chicken pox is not dangerous. We all got it as kids and did just fine.
