VIDEO: Hillel Braun, a Lakewood resident, has been voted as one of the finalists in the Jewish Star singing competition. In the video, the judges – Avraham Fried, Eli Gerstner and Mendy Pellin – talk about each of the 10 finalists after watching a short clip of them performing. The finalists are scheduled to perform live on stage on February 20th.

Yes it shmecks form Goyish but be a little open minded the world we are living in it is ok. Trust me no one is advocating for BMG chevra to leave and join the singing contest.
I was at a chasunah where Hillel performed and it was amazing! He gives the simchah a real yiddishe taam. Congratulations on this accomplishment HDB!
1- The terminology “star,” “fans” and “celebrities” are extremely foreign to our circles. Nothing wrong with the contest in theory but in practice…why must we try to emulate them. Why cant we do it in good taste the way “we” do things?! If we are trying to replicate “their” show then we have actually done a very poor job. (moderated) is so much more entertaining! Ergo why not be original and blaze our own trail!
2- These are gifts bestowed upon people and should be looked upon as just that. A gift on loan from Hashem…that can G-d forbid be taken away. A little humility and hakros hatov would go a long way…
this is why oorah is not making a cd this year.
To the judges: what’s the heter to criticize a singer in public? It turned me off from the whole event.

The “wunderkind” used to be the one who knew shas baal pe at a young age. Now its the one who has a nice voice and is a good entertainer. Oy how far we gone!
