KASHRUS ALERT: Popular Colgate Item Contains Gelatin Derived from Pork

It has been brought to our attention that a popular item from Colgate contains gelatin derived from pork.

An inquiry about the product was sent to Colgate, and this was their response.

“All Colgate toothpastes and toothbrushes that are marketed in the U.S., with the exception of Colgate Max Fresh with Mouthwash Beads and Colgate Wisp (the gelatin is derived from pork) are free of any animal-derived ingredients. All glycerin used in our toothpastes comes from only synthetic or vegetable sources.”

The fact that toothpaste contains non kosher ingredients is nothin new.

The main reason why most are not makpid, is because traditional toothpastes are mainly non food items Calcium Carbonate IE Chalk.

However in the past few years there are toothpastes that are NOT majority non food items. They use Silica [Sand] as an abrasive instead of Chalk. THESE TOOTHPASTES DO NOT HAVE THE HETER that the older versions had.

Hmm interesting…Colgate seems to be contradicting themselves, as their website clearly states that Colgate wisps do not contain ANY animal byproducts whatsoever. Either they are misrepresenting their product, or the brand rep who responded to this inquiry was misinformed. Go to their official website and see it for yourselves.

Mixed and not swollowing doesn’t necessarily mean you did something wrong. But it’s surely better to get the ones without animal derives. Ask your local Rabbi
