Newark Mayor Cory Booker will welcome Kars4Kids, a national car donation charity based in Lakewood, to Newark today to give away more than 1,000 backpacks to neighborhood children at the John F. Kennedy Recreation Center in Newark.
Newark Deputy Mayor Margarita Muñiz will join Kars4Kids at the recreation center to help distribute the backpacks.
The backpack giveaway comes at a time when many families could use help providing their children with new supplies for the upcoming school year. As the U.S. economy continues to struggle, the National Retail Federation has projected that spending on school supplies will drop by an average of almost $50 per family.
This event is the second one in which Kars4Kids will team up with Mayor Booker’s office to help out the children of Newark. In December 2011, Mayor Booker joined Kars4Kids for a winter coat distribution at the same John F. Kennedy Recreation Center. The event was a great success with lines forming around the corner and around 1,000 coats distributed. The Mayor, known for his active Twitter account, responded to a Tweet from Kars4Kids requesting his help in arranging the event. Later, he called the event “a story of the power of Twitter” and proclaimed “[I] was thrilled that they wanted to come here to the city of Newark”.
“We’re proud to partner again with Mayor Booker, whose leadership has produced benefits for the city of Newark and, specifically, for the children of Newark,” said Steven Weldler, a Kars4Kids spokesman. “Kars4Kids shares Mayor Booker’s commitment to children and to education.”
“I am excited to welcome Kars4Kids back to Newark as a partner committed to advancing the well-being of our city’s children and families,” said Mayor Cory Booker, “My administration has focused on expanding educational opportunities and ensuring that our children can succeed in the classroom. As kids across our city prepare to head back to school, we appreciate Kars4Kids and their generous donation of backpacks and supplies.”
Why don’t they give 1000 kids in lakewood?? Their home town, that would be nice!
Now let’s think. If they give to lakewood kids they don’t have political leverage, if the lyrics give in Newark with Corry Booker, they will have the leverage.
Whatever their intentions are it is a very nice gesture.
The lakewood kids wouldn’t use those backpacks. They aren’t designer name and don’t match their socks.
why won’t you post my comment! It is a simple question of – is (moderated- we did not post your comment because it is false. If you have any further questions, contact us, or Kars4Kids, instead of posting false information anonymously).
Wish you can do the same for lakewood so I don’t have to buy 7 new ones every year
Ty
I am not sure about you, but my kids use the same backpacks fro more than one year. They get at least two, if not three years use out of them. There is no reason you have to buy new ones every year…. Kudos to OORAH, a wonderful organization and an amazing kiddush hash-em!! If only they got the true credit for what they do instead of everyone always bashing them! Keep up the great work!!
Kars4Kids does not contribute anything to any child with shomer shabbos parents. period. From the way it was explained to me, it is not out of discrimination ( as all the employees and volunteers are shomer shabbos , but rather because once they open up that dorr it would be endless as they would have to cover many tuitions of people who cant afford to pay private school tuition and the only pay tuition of for people who are not shomer shabbos. .
if you agree or not is each persons call , but these are the facts , The do what they do , and their agenda does not include servicing out community ( although from what i understand they are the largest employer in lakewood) .
its up to each individual to decide weather they want to support them or not,
To #3 what kind of statement is that?
# 6 if they would be in one piece than they can be used for more than 1 year but usually they aren’t in 1 piece
Oorah is abrilliantly run org. If u dont see y they did this im not even gonna bother explaining it. They get donations from all over the country.
#9, maybe you should start buying better quality backpacks, my kids’ last at least two, if not three school years…
