Jackson Township officials have formally applied for federal funding to repave and upgrade Manhattan Street, citing safety concerns and heavy traffic in the area.
Mayor Jennifer Kuhn and Council President Burnstein announced the application, which includes plans for traffic calming measures and pedestrian safety improvements along the corridor near Lucy N. Holman Elementary School and the Holman Athletic Complex.
The proposed project would cover Manhattan Street from Bennetts Mills Road (CR54) to South Cooks Bridge Road (CR636), a heavily traveled cut-through used by nearly 6,000 vehicles daily. The roadway provides access to several public facilities, including Lucy N. Holman Elementary School, the Holman Athletic Complex, and the Jackson Township Municipal Utilities Authority complex, contributing to high pedestrian activity.
Planned upgrades include pedestrian signaling beacons, streetscape enhancements, and additional traffic calming measures. The project is expected to cost approximately $2 million, with early indications suggesting a positive outlook for securing federal funding.
Mayor Kuhn also acknowledged support from multiple local agencies and organizations, including the Jackson M.U.A., Board of Education, Police Department, Department of Public Works, and Jackson Youth Football & Cheer. Further updates are expected as the funding process moves forward.

that’s what funds should be for, for actually improving traffic issues, not like the white Lakewood shuttle bus scam that drives around empty all day, use that money to add more turning lanes and green arrows
