Jackson “Proposes” Biggest Eruv in North America – But is it Real? | G. Sonnenfeld

At this Tuesday evening’s Jackson Township Council meeting, its members will vote on a resolution allegedly allowing for the building of an eruv in Jackson.

While on its face it might seem like a big positive step forward, it appears to be, yet again, more political posturing for the sake of protecting Jackson from more Federal and State investigations and lawsuits, while in no way accommodating Jackson’s Jews and their religious freedom and liberties.

Take a moment, read the resolution. And then ask yourself; does this address the problem of endless harassment and discrimination?

The resolution only approves a single master “Township-wide eruv”, meaning a single eruv would need to encircle the entire border of Jackson, a “solution” which isn’t halachically, logistically, or financially feasible and would mean an Eruv that is over 40 miles long – see map.

Such a Master Eruv might cost millions, or tens of millions of dollars, crossing highways, rivers, streams, wetlands and more and would certainly require years of approvals and permits.

More telling, what the resolution does NOT do, is allow any other Eruv in Jackson.

Tellingly, Jackson refused to consult with any of its local Jewish residents about its resolution. How would they know if their Master 40 plus mile long eruv is feasible?

It appears to take a special level of chutzpah for politicians to tell people how best to practice their religion.

This resolution might seem like a step forward, but according to the local residents who have built local Eruvs and who are active in addressing Jackson discrimination this seems to a ploy Reina, Bressi, Calogero and Nixon are using to try to help extricate Jackson from their deep legal troubles and is not an honest solution.

  1. This Eruv resolution doesn’t CARRY much weight with me, and I think that those who oppose this Eruv resolution are not getting CARRIED away at all. As far as politicians telling people how to best practice their religion, that’s an old problem, and not a new phenomenon.

  2. That sign at the Jackson border that says #Stand up to hate has the same effect and is coming from the same place as someone continuously kicking someone and apologizing as they keep doing it. #Jackson Weak.
