AUDIO: The IRS scam is starting up again. “This week we have had numerous reports that residents are getting phone calls from bogus Internal Revenue Service investigators,” Toms River Police said. “They are calling and stating that there are back taxes due and if you do not make a payment over the phone your credit will be negatively impacted and you will possibly be subjected to arrest. They know some basic personal information about you that they locate on the internet which lends a small bit of legitimacy to the phone call. We are aware of this scam and only need to be contacted in cases where someone is a victim and has made one of these over the phone payments.”
Attached is a recording of an alleged scam voicemail left in a Lakewood resident’s answering machine on Friday.
“We remind residents to never give out personal information over the phone, never make a payment via phone unless you verify that the bill is legitimate, and when in doubt, double check by calling back phone numbers that are officially listed on known websites not the numbers that they supply you during the phone call.”

I got the same voicemail. Should i report it?
To Whom? where?
They called me on friday. They said they did a 5 year audit and i owe almost $,4000 and if i dont pay immidiatly they will issue a warrent for my arrest. They said i cannot pay over the phone – instead they will send someone to pick up the cash from me!
Tell them “OK, meet me at work. The address is 231 Third Street Lakewood, NJ 08701”.
Love it Ron
tell them the address of the police department!
The IRS lists five things scammers often do but the IRS will not do. The IRS will not:
1.Call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill.
2.Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.
3.Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.
4.Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
5.Threaten to bring in local police or other law enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.
These are all red flags that you’re dealing with an imposter, and the IRS advises you to take the following steps:
If you know you owe taxes or think you might owe, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. The IRS workers can help you with a payment issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to believe that you do, report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) at 1.800.366.4484 or at http://www.treasury.gov/tigta.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov. Please add “IRS Telephone Scam” to the comments of your complaint.
