HISTORIC FOOTAGE: 10 Years Ago, Dovid Egert unknowingly launched multi-million dollar fundraiser ‘Bike 4 Chai’

On August 3, 2009, The Lakewood Scoop captured the moment the multi-million dollar fundraiser Bike 4 Chai was born.

It all started when Dovid Egert wasn’t allowed to bring his bike onto the bus heading up to Camp Simcha, Chai Lifeline’s Summer Camp.

So instead, Dovid decided to bike to camp – a 175-mile trip – and raise some funds while at it.

So with his bike, his maps, and some water bottles, Dovid broke through a ribbon in front of Chai Lifeline’s office on Clifton Avenue – unknowingly making history.

Bike 4 Chai was born.

Little did he know at the time, he had launched one of the most successful nonprofit fundraisers worldwide.

By the next year, there were 40 bikers, and as the saying goes, the rest is history.

You will hardly even see Bike 4 Chai advertising its registration anymore, and that’s because they’re full the moment it opens.

This year, 10 years later, Bike 4 Chai has already brought in over $7,000,000.
