For a lot of people in the frum community, GroupMe SMS was just reliable. It worked on every phone. No app. No data plan. No smartphone required. You texted in, everyone got the message.Needless to say, it was also free.
Now that’s gone and the alternatives aren’t great.
WhatsApp needs a smartphone and data. A lot of people don’t have that.
iMessage only works between iPhones. The second someone in the group has a different phone, it falls apart.
Regular group texts through your carrier get chaotic fast. Numbers get shared. Replies go everywhere. There’s no real way to manage it.
None of these actually solve the problem.
