First Lady Tammy Murphy Announces Senate Bid

New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy announced this morning she is seeking the Democrat nomination for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Bob Menendez.

“I’m running for the United States Senate because New Jersey’s kids and families deserve better — plain and simple,” the first lady said in a video announcing her candidacy.

Murphy, who like her husband is a former Goldman Sachs banker, joins a widening field that already includes U.S. Rep. Andy Kim.

“We need a Senator who will work every single day to lower the cost of living, protect abortion rights, end the gun violence epidemic, and defend our democracy,” Murphy said in a statement accompanying the video.

Although she has never held elected office, Murphy, 58, has taken a very active role in her husband’s administration, and has taken on maternal and infant health as her top issues during her time as first lady — issues she highlighted in her announcement.

Menendez, who has held the seat since 2006, has not said whether he would seek reelection.

If she were to be successful, Murphy would be the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from New Jersey.
