A driver who was allegedly under the influence when his pickup truck crashed on the Garden State Parkway in May, killing a woman and leaving the vehicle overturned and engulfed in flames, has been charged with vehicular homicide, officials announced this morning.
Kelvin Gomez-Fuentes, 24, was charged with second-degree vehicular homicide. He had previously been charged with multiple motor vehicle offenses, including driving while intoxicated and reckless driving.
Shortly before 4:00 a.m. on May 17th, New Jersey State Police responded to the southbound express lanes of the Garden State Parkway near milepost 108 for a single-vehicle crash involving a Toyota Tacoma operated by Gomez-Fuentes.
Katherine Andrade-Portillo, 27, of Long Branch, was an occupant of the vehicle. She sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation by New Jersey State Police, assisted by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Unit, determined that Gomez-Fuentes was operating the vehicle under the influence of intoxicating substances when it left the roadway, struck multiple objects, overturned and became engulfed in flames.
Gomez-Fuentes was charged earlier this week and surrendered to law enforcement at the New Jersey State Police barracks in Holmdel. He was transported to the Monmouth County Correctional Institution pending an upcoming court appearance in Monmouth County Superior Court.
