A Brick man was arrested today after allegedly fleeing from a traffic stop near Brick Memorial High School and leading officers on a pursuit.
At approximately 7 a.m., a Brick police officer was conducting traffic enforcement on Lanes Mill Road near Brick Memorial High School when he observed a vehicle stopped on the shoulder while dropping off students.
The officer approached the vehicle and directed the driver, identified as 38-year-old Corey Goodwin of Brick, to move from the shoulder. During the interaction, the officer observed that Goodwin was not wearing a seatbelt and directed him to pull into the Boland Field parking lot so the motor vehicle stop could be conducted safely.
Goodwin initially appeared to comply, activating his turn signal, but instead accelerated northbound on Lanes Mill Road at a high rate of speed. Police said he crossed onto the wrong side of the roadway and passed other vehicles, nearly striking two uniformed school crossing guards who had stopped traffic in both directions.
The officer returned to his marked patrol vehicle and pursued Goodwin. During the pursuit, another officer, who was conducting radar enforcement nearby, clocked Goodwin’s vehicle traveling at 73 mph.
Goodwin eventually stopped at a residence on Lanes Mill Road and fled on foot. Officers pursued him through neighboring backyards in the area of Sawmill Road and Creek Road. Police said Goodwin crossed a creek near Creek Road and continued toward Greenwood Loop Road, where responding officers located and apprehended him.
Goodwin was transported to Brick Township Police Headquarters and charged with Eluding, Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, Hindering Apprehension, and Obstructing the Administration of Law.
A records check also revealed that Goodwin had two outstanding warrants for his arrest.
He was additionally issued multiple motor vehicle summonses, including Reckless Driving, Passing in a No-Passing Zone, Failure to Obey Police Directing Traffic, Failure to Comply with a Police Officer’s Direction, and Failure to Stop for a Crossing Guard’s Whistle, along with several other violations.
Goodwin was subsequently transported to and lodged in the Ocean County Jail.
The incident occurred as Brick Township police officers were actively enforcing traffic laws in and around school zones to protect students, crossing guards, school personnel, and motorists.
The department noted that the incident also follows a recent fatal crash in the area involving a bicyclist. While the incidents are unrelated, police said the recent loss of life serves as a solemn reminder of the potentially devastating consequences of unsafe driving.
The Brick Police Department urged all motorists to exercise caution, remain alert, obey posted traffic laws, and follow the directions of police officers and school crossing guards, particularly during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal when pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle traffic is at its highest.
