Mathew Jenkins won the democratic organization line in Monmouth County on Saturday and Ocean County on Sunday without opposition.
Little is known about Jenkins other than that he is a small business owner without much political experience. He is now set to challenge the Republican nominee, which will most likely be Christopher Smith.
Jenkins will obviously be the underdog in the heavily Republican district.
Meanwhile, Smith is the longest serving Congressman from the State of New Jersey, with 20 terms under his belt. The senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Smith faces five challengers in the GOP primary. He won Republican conventions this year in Monmouth and Ocean counties by lopsided margins.
Last year, Smith raised closed to $ 1.5 million, beating the Democratic challenger, Josh Welle who had raised $300,000 more. Jenkins grew up in Toms River, worked as a biochemistry and molecular biology researcher, and ran a custom furniture shop. He later built a residential contracting company but switched to the fitness industry during the 2008 recession.
