It’s blue lights. I beleive it is a courtesy to pull over. You are not required to.
Blue lights is not a license to do whatever you want….
Red lights is.
I watch this all the time. Come in people. Make believe these vehicles are going to someone you love. They don’t turn on the flashing lights unless it is an emergency. If you see lights move to the side of the road. Your emergency is never as important as theirs.
Must have been a real serious call ?
Driving pretty quick on rain slick roads, not sure who was a worse driver.
39:3-54.12. Rights of motor vehicle with emergency lights in operation.
6. Nothing contained herein is intended to grant to any member of a volunteer fire company, a volunteer first aid or rescue squad or a volunteer Office of Emergency Management any privileges or exemptions denied to the drivers of other vehicles, and such members operating emergency warning lights shall drive with due regard for the safety of all persons and shall obey all the traffic laws of this State including R.S.39:4-81, provided, however, that the drivers of non-emergency vehicles upon any highway shall yield the right of way to the vehicle of any member of a volunteer fire company, a volunteer first aid or rescue squad or a volunteer Office of Emergency Management operating emergency warning lights in the same manner as is provided for authorized emergency vehicles pursuant to R.S.39:4-92.
C’mon people.
All the video shows is someone who suddenly notices an emergency vehicle in (her) rear view mirror and panics – brakes. Then gets composed and pulls over to the right. This is not negligence or someone who doesn’t pull over for emergency vehicles.
It is over-kill to post this
Looks like he was unsure or startled at first but then pulled over.
wrong. New Jersey requires motorists to yield to blue lights. You must be from New York.
How about “What not to do when driving with your flashing lights on”? A tiny dash light and no siren is negligence on the responder’s part. Pulling in behind someone and honking is just negligent.
Agree with yaakov chaim. This is clearly some starteled driver. Come on
@Miss Informed look closer not rain slick. Just reflection of light off camera at night
I’m a first responder. I see this all the time. In this particular case, perhaps, it’s possible it’s just a flustered driver. That’s not the point. I see many drivers who are not paying attention. many more who just don’t seem to care, I’ll drive a couple blocks before they decide to pull over or make a turn. That’s not a flustered driver. Granted, many think it’s just a courtesy, but please, what if you needed help and we can’t get to you in time because multiple drivers decided not give us the ‘courtesy’ today.
In truth, it’s a two part law as Eli stated above. Emergency first responders have to obey traffic laws. However, in NJ motorist ARE required to yield to first responders. Once motorist yield the responder may proceed.
As for the single blue light and no siren – it is the law, in fact. Google it. All we have is our airhorn and single light. Someone is in trouble and we need to get there as soon as possible, it could be you. We will do all we can including honking our horn at cars who don’t pull over.
You’d need to obtain a licences to use multiple lights and a siren and that is given out sparingly. It’s a whole other discussion why some in this town don’t follow this law.
…and no, Red lights aren’t either a licences to do what you want… Yes, Google it.
Look up the law before making assumptions, Gabi. Others commenting on this post also seem ignorant or just don’t care. Start caring, it may be you next time.
Eli and some others, do you keep these laws or do you use red lights and sirens when you feel like it? Just like to know the truth.
