Dashcam Video Captures Moment Van Slams into School Bus Picking Up Students in Lakewood

Dashcam footage obtained by TLS from a school bus captured the frightening moment when a large van came barreling straight into it this morning in Lakewood.

The accident happened around 7:30 AM on Central Avenue while the school bus was stopped with its red lights flashing picking up students.

The dashcam shows a car stopped for the lights, but the driver in the van behind it failed to stop and instead swerved to avoid hitting the car, slammed head on into the school bus.

At least two passengers sustained injuries, and both vehicles sustained serious damage.

  1. Unrelated but I would like to share what happened to me last week. I was approaching a stopped bus with no yellow lights on, while I passed the driver abruptly opened her stop sign. Bus drivers, please give us at least a 10-20 second warning!

  2. Something strange about the car in front of the van. It came way too close to the bus before stopping and then stopped short. Might have been thinking to beat the flashing red lights then pulled back. No excuse for the van, though, it should have stopped on its own regardless of the driver in front

  3. I think some of those bus drivers keep their flashing lights on even when they shouldn’t be, which is one of the reasons people are fed up with them. How many times have they put on those lights and stopped at a corner when they notice another bus waiting at the stop sign? I’ve seen it many times which is why people are fed up with them. They’ve abused their flashing lights and aren’t trusted!

    • Perhaps bus drivers are fed up with drivers not stopping. Being fed up is not an excuse for violating a law. Since you tend to think that bus drivers are all evil, perhaps you should try being a bus driver just for one day and see the other side of the coin. Once you’ve been on the other side feel free to tell us bus drivers how to safely transport your kids to & from school.

  4. Stop blaming the bus drivers and pay attention to your driving! If your child was on that bus you would want your driver to use the caution lights as long as they feel they need to for the safety of the child 4

  5. Where are all the hatters?

Of course the bus is always automatically at fault…

If the bus wouldn’t have a dashcam everyone would of bashed the bus drivers for being careless…

  6. The reason why a bus driver sometimes have a yellow light on for a longer period is because he puts it on for a stop and that stop weren’t there so he proceeded, a bus driver cannot see when the yellow light is on, if he remembers he will Close it, but its very normal not to notice that the yellow light is on.

  7. Our gradson was in van, and sustained injuries.
Fractured jaw, lost a few teeth, messed up gums etc.
It’s from Hashem, but he has a long recovery and trauma ahead, cant attend yeshiva for a while, eat normal, implants… We are grateful it was Not a head injury…. Refuah schlema to all who need. GMAR CHASIMA TOVA

  8. The driver of the van, I am sure that person is going through a temporary depression. I am sure he or she really regrets the circumstances that led to the accident.
May the Almighty help that individual to become a much better and safer driver.
    Food for Thought:
BTW a defensive driving course through AARP is inexpensive, you save on car insurance about 5% every year for 3 years and you don’t have to be 55 years old to sign up for their online course.
