A 43-year-old man from the Whiting section of Manchester was airlifted to a hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries after he was struck by a vehicle Sunday night at an intersection in Manchester Township, police say.

Manchester Township police were called to County Route 530 and Swift Circle in the Whiting section of the township at about 9:37 p.m. for a report of a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian.

Officers arriving at the scene found a gray 2013 Toyota Camry with front-end damage and the pedestrian, identified as Richard J. Fescharek of Whiting, unresponsive in a grassy area near the roadway, police said.

The investigation determined that the Toyota was traveling west on County Route 530 when Fescharek entered the roadway in front of the vehicle, resulting in a collision within the intersection, according to police. The impact propelled Fescharek about 50 feet to the northwest corner of the intersection.

Fescharek suffered multiple potentially life-threatening injuries and was transported by Life Flight medical helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, authorities said.

The Camry was driven by 63-year-old Rocco Lanzetti of Wrightstown, who was not injured.

The roadway was partially closed for several hours as police investigated the crash and crews cleaned up the scene.

Manchester Township EMS, Robert Wood Johnson paramedics, the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit and Accurate Towing assisted at the scene.

The investigation remains ongoing. Police said improper crossing by the pedestrian appears to have been a contributing factor at this point.

The crash is being investigated by Patrolman Anthony DeBlasio of the Manchester Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit.
