An independent candidate for governor of New Jersey says he has raised enough money to qualify for taxpayer matching funds. Chris Daggett is the third independent ever to qualify for the money in New Jersey’s gubernatorial election. It takes $340,000 to qualify for the matching campaign money. Candidates who reach that level can get $2 in matching money for every $1 they raise until they reach a total of $10.9 million. The former state environmental protection commissioner says he expects to raise the maximum. Republican Chris Christie is also using the matching program. Democratic incumbent Jon Corzine is not participating in public financing, which means he has no limits on how much he can spend. AP
