Since the monumental supreme court ruling yesterday striking down the gun control law, TLS has been inundated with questions of what it means for gun owners in and around Lakewood, or anywhere in New Jersey.

The Lakewood Police Department tells TLS it has not yet received any guidance from the State or County.

However, multiple law enforcement officials tell TLS, based on the AG guidance, nothing has changed, except for the justifiable need requirement. Which means, you still need a permit to carry, and everything remains the same with regards to applying for a permit to carry. Applications must meet all other criteria to obtain a permit.

Currently, all applications must be approved by the Lakewood Police Department, the New Jersey State Police, and the New Jersey courts.

Even after an application is submitted, it does not mean an automatic approval, the officials said. There are a lot of requirement which need to be met to receive an approval. The only requirement you no longer need, is proving justifiable need to carry a gun.

Many have also asked about reciprocity (out of state permits). That too, does not work in New Jersey, and a permit from other states will not allow you to carry a gun here. You will need a specific carry permit from New Jersey.

As earlier reported, even with the justifiable need removed, Governor Murphy intends to add extreme limits as to where a resident would be able to carry.
