Assemblyman John Burzichelli (D-Gloucester/Cumberland/Salem) today announced that he will again introduce a bill to prohibit boards of education in New Jersey from charging public school students a fee to participate in extracurricular activities.
“Extracurricular activities are part of what makes a well-rounded student. Students should not be denied the opportunity to play a sport or be part of the school band because their parents cannot afford to pay for it,” said Burzichelli. “These are public schools, not private clubs. New Jersey residents pay enough property taxes, which largely support our public schools. They expect their children to get all the benefits that come with a public education, including after-school activities.”
The bill forbids a board of education from charging a student or the student’s parent or legal guardian a fee to participate in extracurricular activities. Burzichelli first introduced the bill in 2010.
“Charging these fees is not only unfair to taxpayers, but also creates inequity among students,” said Burzichelli. “Not everyone can afford to pay these additional charges, which creates a distinction between the haves and the have nots. That goes directly against the spirit of public education.” [TLS]
doesn’t extracurricular and after school activities mean that it is not part of the public education, rather an extra? if so why is everyone entitled?
When will the Democrats pass a bill forbidding themselves from charging the taxpayers for all their extracurricular activities………
The assemblyman must have missed out on the fact that public school boards are not required to provide any extracurricular activities.
When are the politicians in this state, especially Democrats, and a whole lot of people going to realize that the money train has left and there is no more to give, however wonderful the programs are. When spending items are looked at line by line in all types of government activities and wasteful spending is cut then come to the public and ask for more money!
Here come the Democrats, well informed as they are, most of the after school programs have been dropped for lack of funds and interest.
The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.
Another dumb law by some dumb people. The money has to come from somewhere. Maybe the democrats think that money grows on trees.
