One person was killed and eight others injured in a multi-vehicle accident this evening in Lakewood.
The accident occurred on Route 88 near the Ocean County Park shortly before 9 PM.

Oy. Names for tehillim
Want tehillim???start driving like menshen. I’m here 2 weeks and already witnessed 3 major crashes. And 50 almost crashes.
It’s no joke what’s going here and there needs to be some major education here for young drivers.
If anyone is interested to get involved email me [email protected]
There is information suggesting this was a drunk driver. So, while you’re points are valid, waiting for the facts to come out before posting may be wise
It’s not just young drivers
Everyone should have a speedy recovery.
Names for Tehilim?
Your here only 2 weeks and you saw 50 “almost” crashes?????
Can you enlighten us where you saw these? That’s more then 3 a day. You sure your eyes are in good condition?
3 a day is a very low number, I see much more than that every day
Joel, it might not be the right time to bring that up. But, one you did, I totally agree with you. Everybody is RUSHING! Leave enough time to “sit back, relax and ENJOY the ride”!!!
This is really sad . I heard the crash it was really loud got me really scared when i heard it . It happened near my house . Hope everyone will be okay prayers go out to the familes .??
Can someone answer me is tehilam needed ?
“Misaskem was not requested”
No need for Tehillim in this case. May all the injured have a speedy recovery.
I heard that as of now it seems like cause of the Accident was DWI
From my understanding, no tehillim needed. General prayers will help.
I heard that it was a drunk driver (doa) who just kept on plowing into the cars…
Now IS the time to be talking about that, rather before any more tragedies occur, thanks for that comment Joel and i wish you all the success in getting people to participate and further more understand and agree to drive courteously. It is a matter of life and death… I am a truck driver and the way that people drive in lakewood is horrendous traffic laws are not obeyed and the people risk life and limb to get in front or go first and this is the end result so much more often than it should be.
Way to be respectful and blur out the license plates!
Blurring out license plates isn’t necessary. No different than seeing a parked car, license plates are visible. What can a person do with a license plate number?
Actually it is necessary, if a family member or close friends saw this prior to being notified they might be able to identify the vehicle by the license plate. So it’s a big difference between the vehicle just being parked………
This is a risk every single day in our area. The roads are over crowded and the drivers are extremely distracted. I witness multiple almost crashes a day as well. It’s a well known problem.
Joel, can you please explain for those of us who are obviously not as intelligent as you are, what your rant has to do with saying Tehillim?
I was in Lakewood a couple of weeks ago for several hours and I all I can say is that I’m lucky that I got out alive. People either speed like planes or crawl like turtles. Isn’t there a middle way?
@tomatoface – now IS the best time to bring this up so everyone can see what happens to innocent people when drivers are being stupid.
To Joel: its not only the young drivers that are causing these accidents.
I live outside a big development and every other day there is at least 1 crash. People never stop at the stop sign causing these crashes. People in this town need to follow the laws of driving and then maybe our roads would be a lot safer and people who drive through our town would not bash us.
All our prayers go out to the families of the Injured. A speedy Recovery For all.
i have been living in Lakewood for some time already and unfortunately, I do agree very much with Joel ( the second comment ) the way people drive in Lakewood became totally unacceptable, I don’t know where they get their licenses and who issues them but it there is total lack of following basic rules of driving,
A speedy recovery to all, our thoughts and prayers with the injured and their families.
Speed kills!
Lakewood please slow down!
Fathers please have talk with your family. Rabbis please speak to your congregation about safe driving habits.
When it comes to the laws of Loshen Hora there is a rather big difference between saying there are people in City X and saying the people of City X don’t drive the way they should.
Moshe you bring up a good point in all my 16 years in Lakewood I don’t recall any speeches from a Rav about speeding. just because driving is prohibited on Shabbos it doesn’t mean it’s prohibited from speaking about it on Shabbos. Maybe we should have a massive asifa in the stadium and get some prominent Rabbonim to address the issue….
It is not just the speeding, slow drivers as well.Stay to the right. It is people coming through the lights to turn the corners. Stop and look at the red light. Yes you have the right to turn right on red after you look. You have people running across the street running to temple or wherever. Little children running across the street. I have lived in Howell 17 years and my mom lives in Southern Lakewood so I cut through and its terrifying. Please parents do not let your children cross Route 9 themselves. Thank you in advance
Yes,i second @be careful’s comment. Laws of loshan horah and hotzois shem ra need to be abidded and free speech is not free when misused and abused. Catogorize the sitution and your opinions correctly and you youll do yourself and all a big favor
To Joel maybe go back ! We can’t have someone moving here 2 weeks ago and almost having 50 accidents
No need to start blaming anyone or anything right now. We all know the lessons about driving that need to be learned. Everyone can improve their driving and mentschlichkeit on the road. Let’s just do it.
How about making laws of DWI a bit more harsh, anybody?
Great idea! How will that punish the dead guy?
Driving slower causes accidents! Drive with the speed limit, don’t force others to compensate for your missed turns and GET OFF THE PHONE. Do people realize that the fine for talking on the telephone is $500, with no option of a plea bargain?
To Phd: you don’t recall any rov speaking about it? Are you in every shul every shabbos? The rov of a very sizable kehilla made driving safety one of his main points in his past shabbos shuva drasha.
*right here in Lakewood.
Joel maybe your the famous guy in the joke. a guy gets a call from his wife to be careful because there’s a car driving the wrong way. The guy responds it’s not one car it’s all the cars….
@WestSider, that’s great that one shul addressed safety concerns of driving in Lakewood but how many shul’s are actually in Lakewood? While I don’t think it’s a Rabbi’s responsibility to ask his congregation to slow down and drive safely, I don’t think it would hurt. I just wish everybody driving in and around Lakewood would slow down, be more courteous to other drivers & pedestrians & obey traffic laws. (And that is directed at EVERYBODY, not just the Lakewood residents majority.
I don’t follow. @Westsider was replying to Phd who said that he does not recall any Rav ever speaking about it to which @Westsider asked if Phd is in every shul every Shabbos and @Westsider recalls that “The rov of a very sizable kehilla made driving safety one of his main points in his past shabbos shuva drasha”. Just stay on topic. You could’ve just left out your first sentence.
I noticed a new phenomenon here in Lakewood. When women speak on the phone while driving, they hold the phone a few inches away from their face.
They think they won’t get a ticket for that.
They missed the boat. The law states that you may not have a handheld device in your hand while operating a vehicle.
It doesn’t matter if it’s 4 inches from your face.
Hopefully this will encourage some people to use Bluetooth. (which nowadays all cars come pre-equipped with Bluetooth technology)
These comments are all ridiculous. The person driving wasn’t a young person who wasn’t careful. It wasn’t a woman on the phone wherever she was holding it and it wasn’t s man rushing from one playgroup pickup to the next. It was a drunk person who caused this massive accident. These accidents happen everywhere. Stop blaming the frum community
ok for all those concerned about “Lashin Hara” get off the comment sections on news sites and go learn Chafetz Chaim.
For the rest of the sane people that recognize the problem and those that brought up Rabonim speaking about the issue:
It’s absolutely and most definitely something a Rav should speak about.
To use Lakewood lingo It’s a “Bor bershus harabim” on every street in Lakewood!
It’s a bain Adom and it’s l’makom it’s Shor Shnogach and mazek!
injuring someone or their property because you’re reckless is a huge “torah” issue!
If you’re on the way to Kolel derech eretz kadmo l’torah means slow down and don’t cut anyone off.
Being a cause of a car crash is being over on Ve’ahavta l’rayacha, Lo Saamod al dam, at the very minimum and lo sirtzach at its worst!
So should a Rav talk about this? Hmm
And for you who are concerned about what a Rav should talk about, get off the comment sections on news sites and go talk to one.
And for the sane people who know how to discuss an issue I have nothing to add.
It’s safer to hold your cell phone away from your head in general. Holding the phone to the ear can c’v cause a brain tumor, bec the radiation is too close to the brain. I know this has nothing to do with the original post, but it’s an important thing for people to know..
I work on New Hampshire Ave. What Joel said is true. For many hour’s a day all my co-workers and I hear are screeching tires on the road. That is something I would consider an “almost accident” or close call. There is no need for it! Then with the sirens of the first responders, most days you can time them, every 10 minutes a new call is put out. What are people doing out there? Why can’t people just be focused on driving while driving? Even if people need to leave their home’s early to get all their thing’s done so they aren’t spent speeding or driving so carelessly. Use your brain’s people! Time management can save lives. Everyone stay safe.
Why won’t you post my last comment???
Unfortunately there IS a driving problem here in Lakewood. Part of the issue is the lack of courtesy many drivers have for others they share the road with which necessitates that one must act aggressively to get anywhere. For example, a well known and Chosheve Rov was here from out of town recently and related the following. He complained that he was at a busy intersection (Caranetta onto Central) and was purposefully not allowed to merge in by numerous drivers. At one point he made eye contact with a yungerman who nodded NO (I will not let you in.) The light changed from red to green multiple times before he forced his way in. He was quite shocked at the lack of respect to elders aside from the lack of basic courtesy. (Aside from the fact that he is a tremendous Talmud chochom which didn’t seem to be his taana.)
Either way, because of the traffic and tight schedules that many people have, these issues seem to be consistently getting worse. I’m not sure what can be done to alleviate the problem, but common courtesy is not a choice but a must! The Chillul Hashem is enormous and is reality. One of the biggest complaints currently getting thrown around by “concerned” people in neighboring townships is that this bad driving behavior will start to affect them.
It is irrelevant what caused last night’s crash, either way a real problem exists and must be addressed.
PLEASE EVERYONE TAKE THIS TO HEART, DRIVE SAFELY AND START THINKING, HOW WILL OTHERS ON THE ROAD THINK OF US?
