Lakewood school bus drivers are threatening to strike after discovering they will only get paid for actual driving time, and not for the entire duration of the program.
The Extended School Year program (ESY) at the Oak Street school is five hours long, and drivers were apparently promised by former Transportation Director Lisa Vargas they would get paid for the full time of the program – despite driving time only being approximately one hour.
Upon learning they would be losing that extra pay, they threatened to strike.
In a letter, District Superintendent Laura Winters explained the District’s position of paying only time worked – per the new resolution this week.
Inzelbuch says that due to bad contracts, drivers and aides are being paid despite not necessarily actually working for the full time agreed to in the contract. https://t.co/Fp1ng2hdmj

“I do have a significant, immediate concern as to your comment that you stated that many bus drivers are considering not coming to work on Monday,” Winters wrote in a letter obtained by TLS. “Do you believe this is a viable concern for the district, or just an initial reaction to last night’s meeting?”
Developing story.
Ridiculous!
Here you have the Lakewood township shelling out their own money to pay for PUBLIC courtesy bussing all while this nonsense is going on within the BOE
Thank you to the board members for being on top of things!
Why are bus drivers working on monday. There is no Public School????
First of all we drivers & aides don’t just do oak street school we also do high school& middle school which is more than an hour plus we have to pre trip & post trip & clean our buses & fuel for gas/diesel people need to get they’re facts straight before dumping on the transportation department if only you KNEW where your money was going you’d understand cause it certainly isn’t going to just the public transportation please get the facts straight before anyone opens they’re mouth with false accusations
While I feel empathy for the drivers who were not properly educated as to the terms of their employment before accepting the position, I cannot support a strike that will harm children. The drivers are not unionized and any that strike should be terminated for abandoning their positions. The district and general counsel need to sit with drivers and work this out ASAP. General Counsel needs to get familiar with the National Fair Standards in Labor Act or engage an employment attorney. Paying for only driving time and not bus depot to bus depot time when REQUIRED by the district appears to be a violation of federal labor law.
Can someone please explain to me why the State Monitors are still in Lakewood? it seems they are just costing us more $
Look I work there. I do not get paid for any time I’m not working. Nor do I get paid apparently for last minute mandatory meetings when im on vacation and have to come home because its mandatory. No ones walki h out its not true.
Start calling in the people who work in transportation office
Ask them what they do for their big salary and overtime
bus drivers are right, I’d bet not a one would have agreed to work for an hour a day. How much do they get paid an hour already
I believe there are larger problems then the Oakstreet summer school. This story could’ve been written in a more fair balance
The problem is with the big shots getting high salaries and get rid of. State monitor and his salary what dies he do ? Nothing
