Bodum USA has recalled about 5.9 million French press coffee makers after dozens of reports of the glass carafes unexpectedly breaking during use, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced today.
The recall involves Bodum 8-cup and 12-cup French press coffee makers with replaceable glass carafes – the Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper, and Kenya models. The Bodum name appears on the frame and inner lid of most models, and is engraved, along with product warnings, on the glass carafes.
According to the CPSC, the carafe can unexpectedly break during use if the glass is damaged or cracked – including from stirring the coffee with a metal spoon – posing a risk of serious burn injuries. Bodum USA has identified 70 reports of carafes breaking during use, including 48 reports of burns to consumers.
The recalled coffee makers were sold at Target, Walmart, and coffee and home-goods stores nationwide, and online at Bodum.com, Amazon.com, Target.com, and Walmart.com, from 1974 through October 2026, for between about $15 and $65.
Consumers should immediately stop using metal spoons or utensils to stir coffee in the glass carafe, and contact Bodum to receive a free plastic stirring spoon and warning label. Bodum USA can be reached toll-free at 888-879-8213 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, by email at [email protected], or through the recall website at bodumfrenchpressrecall.expertinquiry.com. The recall number is 27-055.
TLS previously reported on the Stanley recall of 2.6 million travel mugs, also over a burn hazard.
