BEWARE: Lakewood Family Nearly Eats Treif After Confusing Restaurant Name

TAKE NOTE: A local resident tells TLS he was out of town and told his family to order dinner online.

However, instead of ordering from the Kosher restaurant Smash House, they mistakenly ordered from Smashburger, which is a non-Kosher restaurant.

Luckily though, when the order arrived via Uber Eats, the family noticed the packaging did not look familiar, and realized their mistake before eating it.

The family shared the receipts only with TLS.

That’s exactly why I was shocked that the hechsher would allow a “cheese” burger on the menu.

They don’t list a single “cheeseburger” on their menu. They might have some burgers with vegan cheese clearly listed as vegan in the ingredients, but not a single “cheeseburger”. Maybe do the slightest bit of research before you slander a frum business.

In the screenshot shown, the treife place they they ordered from clearly says Cheesburger.

I actually ate there and read the menu. When they offer an item that people refer to as a cheese burger, that exactly is what causes people to let their guard down. Now I’m not saying it’s the stores fault. I’m Just saying that I’m shocked that the hasgacha didn’t have an issue.

Check out their online menu. They offer a “Philly Cheese Sando” with Steak and Vegan Cheese listed in the ingredients. Also, many of their items list Beef Bacon in the ingredients. I believe they even skipped the word “Beef” in their promotional clip on Ephraim Feder’s status.

This is not in line with the sensitivities of our town. Try that in any Middle East country and see what happens next.

I’m sorry but this comment is disgusting! I know many beautiful, ehrliche people in Toms River. How can you just slander a whole town like that? And in Y’mai S’firah to boot!

He’s right about hangouts (whether he means it serious or sarcastically), but it’s true – no restaurant is allowed to have that, as per their hashgacha – not in Lakewood or anywhere. No idea if what he’s saying is true per se’, or he’s just pointing out generally.

Right but they are all allowed to push gashmyuis all over this town. No limits on that? I don’t mean this store per se. It’s so ironic how we take pride in little things without seeing the big picture. Just like the concert ban but it’s ok to have poolside singers without a mechitza.

No, and thats already a challenge! But each store says that IN CONTEXT theres nothing wrong. there are different circumstances that may call for a more “luxurious” standard, its hard to gauge, hence its an issue.

But then you have this, which is not something that is “appropriate depending on context” but very basically, either inappropriate or not.

And there are many that feel it is NOT.

Who needs anti semites Like Tucker Carlson when we unfortunately have haters in our own community. No wonder Moshiach cant come. Shame on you!!! These hangouts exist in lakewood and most of the people hanging out are from Lakewood not from the local toms river family’s. Unfortunately these troubled children come from every walk of life including very yeshivishe families

Choose your words carefully. You might be giving the store grounds for a defamation lawsuit. They do not call any of their burgers a “cheeseburger”, and the ingredients clearly state “Vegan Cheese”. On their end there is no ambiguity. This issue falls squarely on the consumer.

Not sure who you are talking to, but no, there are no grounds for a lawsuit on an anonymous comment board like this.

Next time, I’ll take pull over my car when ordering so I can pay more attention.

About 15 years ago, we got a call from Discover cc, informing us that there was fraud on our card and they were closing it. How did they know? There was a charge from a national chain burger bar “and you’re Jewish, you eat kosher, right?” And the card was flagged and closed.

Drunkard Apologizes to Smash House Customers for Getting Smashed In The Smash House; “I’m Sorry,” He Said, “I Thought the Smash House Was a Place Where People Get Smashed”
Longtime alcoholic, Robert Stoneman, apologized to the customers of Smash House Burger restaurant on Sunday after he consumed several bottles of vodka and collapsed on to the floor of the restaurant.
“I’m sorry,” he said, “I thought Smash House was a place where people get smashed.”
Upon awakening from his hangover and apologizing to the customers, Mr. Stoneman hailed a taxi and asked the cab driver to take him to his favorite pub: the ‘Hammered Saloon’.

The issue is that they aren’t listed as “kosher” on Uber Eats like all the other kosher restaurants, just “burgers”. So there is no way to tell them apart from Smash Burger, the treif listing.

If you see two stores with similar names, verify the kashrus before ordering. I assume the kids saw smashburger before they even saw smash house in which case no additional wording in Smash House’s name would’ve helped.

Although the store sign says Smash House Burgers & more, their online listing is “Smash House Burger” which sounds awfully similar to “Smashburger”. The Devil is in the details.

The same thing happened to me in a non-kosher Bravos in NYC. I had no idea there were non-kosher locations, and while I saw the pepperoni slices, I assumed they were mock pepperoni. I realized it was not kosher after I had already received my slice and paid. I felt something was off by not seeing any Jews in the store, so I asked the cashier to see the kashrus certificate… It didn’t seem like this was the first time they were asked for it and he let me return the slice for my money back.

I’d be shocked if any adult would make this mistake. A quick perusal of the smashburger menu shows the following options (exact wording)- bacon, chili topped with aged cheddar cheese, cup of real cheddar cheese sauce, milkshakes with Haagen Dazs ice cream. If one orders from such a menu without confirming the kashrus, that’s on them. If one’s children are too young to know that adding “American cheese” to their burger won’t mean vegan cheese, they’re not old enough to trust with ordering food. Imagine if they’d ordered from Pizza Hut instead of Pita Hut. Would we blame pita hut?
Btw here’s the menu from Smash House- vegan “cheeze”, facon. No other treif-sounding or dairy items.

Did the treif place at least use cholov yisroel cheese on their cheeseburgers?

I just went on the website smash burger just to see how they can mess up. They Sell BACON! the cheeses that are put on the sandwiches are american cheese swiss cheese and many other cheeses.
You can’t assume that that is kosher.
I once went on a website of a kosher establishment. And just by messing up on one syllable, the menu that popped up had non kosher options. I ended up just calling the store and ordering.

Even if they ordered from the kosher restaurant, would they have eaten the food without the hechsher tape sealing the bag?

The problem is more the similar name than the items.

Lbk
Reply to  anonymous

I think the point is that even if they ordered treif they wouldn’t have eaten it, if it came without appropriate seal. In many places, all the kosher restaurants deliver via Uber Eats or Sauce or other similar delivery services and even if you order from the right place, the delivery person can deliver the wrong food. Most frum people would not eat a sandwich delivered by a non-frum person without verifying that it was the kosher food they thought they ordered.

Eli

I think we see from some of these comments that we have a lot of work to do. Especially during Sefirah. If Mashiach is waiting to come, I think sinas chinam is part of the cause. Not kinds of restaurants.
( yes, people have to be careful. Looks like in this case some more awareness would be helpful). Let’s focus on the beauty of each Yid. Each is so precious.

Just stop kverching, virtue signaling and making your own Torah. Also, if kids are hanging out, isn’t it better for them to be in a kosher eatery than in some bar or parking lot?
